USVI-On-Line has been covering the U.S. Virgin Islands since 1995 — long enough to watch villas get sold and renamed, restaurants close for good, and a hurricane take years off a resort’s reopening date. Most travel information about these islands goes stale fast and stays online for a decade anyway. We try not to do that.

Every logistics page here — ferry schedules, taxi fares, what’s actually open right now — carries a “last verified” date, checked against the operator or agency itself, not copied forward from whatever was true a few years ago. Where something’s closed, sold, or changed, we say so instead of leaving the old listing standing. Our Travel Tips section has the practical stuff most sites skip: how the ferries and barge actually work, what a BVI day trip really requires, what to expect from island power and water.

St. Croix

St. Croix is the largest of the three islands and the least developed — no cruise-ship crowds to speak of most days, and a slower pace that shows in its two historic towns. Christiansted and Frederiksted both retain their Danish colonial architecture and street layout, a legacy of the era before the U.S. purchased the territory in 1917. It’s also the only USVI island with a working rum distillery you can actually tour, and the best base if you want diving — Cane Bay’s shore-accessible wall dive is one of the best in the Caribbean without a boat.

St. John

Roughly 60% of St. John sits inside Virgin Islands National Park, and it shows: no traffic lights, no big resorts, and a beach-to-beach drive that takes you past more trailhead signs than storefronts. There’s no airport — you get here by ferry, either from Red Hook on St. Thomas or, less frequently, from Charlotte Amalie. What you get in exchange is the best beach access and hiking in the territory, and a small-town center in Cruz Bay that hasn’t been rebuilt into a resort strip.

St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the USVI’s main gateway — its airport is the territory’s primary point of entry, and Charlotte Amalie is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean, which shapes almost everything else about the island. Duty-free shopping downtown is a real draw, not just a marketing line, and Red Hook on the island’s east end is the jumping-off point for ferries to both St. John and the British Virgin Islands. It’s also where most first-timers land regardless of which island they’re actually staying on.
