Best lobster dinner

Post by brenda »

Where did you have your best lobster dinner? One trip I had a great lobster at The Lime Inn. The next time it was not so great. Went to Morgan's Mango for their lobster night and they were out. Had one at Zo-Zo's and it was way too much "stuff" on the plate for me. I like to keep it somewhat simple. Last trip, I didn't bother. Any advice?

Ted's clam shack in Maine :)
LOL
Can't say I've had the Caribbean Lobster, not sure I'd be a fan.

There is really no comparison. Maine lobster is MUCH better. The Caribbean lobster can be tough if not cooked properly and not as sweet. That said, I have had good Caribbean lobster. Just hate paying top dollar for a not so good one.

We had amazing lobster dinner at Morgan's Mango. It was delicious. But we did get there late and they were out of 1 pound lobsters so we paid about $15 more for bigger ones.

We love Morgans Mango lobster....yummmmmmy :)

We like Lime Inn as well but about 30% of the time I end up with a tough one - but when you get a good one, it's a great one :)

If you want to try something a little different, the Stone Terrace has an entirelty new menu--they have a lobster three ways on there--it is a butter poached tail, a "cappucino" (foamy creamy lobster soup), and a lobster-new potato galette. Of the lobster John tried this trip, this was his favorite preparation. That said, he greatly prefers Atlantic lobster.

Caribbean lobster is definitely different. Smaller, often tougher & much depends on the freshness & prep. I've found the simplier the better. The best being the lobster we had on our honeymoon in Jamaica. It was brushed with LOTS of butter and grilled on an open fire. OMG it was good.

The best one I ever had in the Virgin Islands was from the Food Center just outside of Red Hook. I went in there and picked out a nice 3 pounder out of the tank – brought it back and cooked that bug up. Melted Danish Butter, champagne, island music in the back ground and my lovely wife. Yep – that was the a great dinner.

Best on St. John was at the Grand Buffet at Caneel. Why? Because I could eat as many as I wanted. I ate 4. Yes, I said 4. 1-2-3-4.

Only did that once though. Lesson learned (lesson being: don't be a pig). Since then, on every trip, my favorite lobster meal is at Morgan's Mango.

Big Bamboo on Loblolly Bay Anegada! The last lobster I had on STJ was Thanksgiving 1997 at The Fish Trap.

The Rock Cafe on Virgin Gorda in 06 was better than Lime Inn on STJ in 07.

Maybe the closer to Anegada the better, or like Rick, actually on Anegada.

Nothing like Maine lobster though right off the boat from a local fishermans co-op. And one of the best Rum Punches I ever had was at Barnacle Billys in Perkins Cove Maine. Go figure.

I got to say my top three were.

1: Anegada Reef Hotel, we sat at the table drinking a cold carib and watched them pull it out of the trap at the Dinghy dock an clean it while we waited.

2: Corsair's on Jost Vandyke

3: Another vote for Morgan's Mango (the Lime Inn was a close second)

VickiH-- Don't be shy sister-- I have been known to eat a 5 lb lobster at the Palm all by myself!! I LOVE lobster -- can't get enough of it and it's rare when I can find a place that does them well.

When I see a 1 lb lobster it doesn't impress - just looks like a very large shrimp to me.

It's my understanding though that the Caneel Bay Buffet is only open to guests -- or is that one of their other restaurants?
