Donkeys
Ummmm, I don't think you want to know. But, you should remember that they are wild animals and not pets.
Last May the car in front of us hit a stray dog on Jacob's Ladder and kept going. I made my huband drive over the hill and I ran into the vets office to get a Vet to come help it. Before they would even get out of their chair, they asked if I was will to pay for any treatment. Needless to say (the sucker I am) I plunked down my credit card on the desk and drug the Vet out by the arm. The poor puppy had passed away by the time we got back. Imagine my Hubby's surprise when I told him we had to go back to the Vets office to retrieve my credit card
Had that puppy made it, I not only would have had a Vet bill but a bill to find a way to get that puppy back home with me. Not exactly what my Hubby bargained for on vacation.
My point is that they really don't have the funds to save them all. They do the best they can considering STJ has a HUGE stray/wild animal population. If you would like to send a donation, here is the website:

Just want to add that the Animal Care Center on STJ has a program that allows you to adopt an island animal (dog/puppy/cat/kitten) and return with it to the States at the end of your vacation - if you wish to consider it just drop by the center while you are here - they have all the information and ways to make this happen - such a great program

It is a great program! I've already discussed this with my Hubby and he knows that when we are ready for another dog, it will be from STJ
Pia, don't they also let you "adopt" a dog for the time your on vacation? I've heard that they do this. It would certainly make sense because after spending a week with an animal, who could give it back? I can't see that villa's actually allow you to have pets in them though.

HELLO FROM MICHIGAN...
The good thing about the STJ shelter is that it is a "no kill" shelter
sorry I can't say the same for STT
If you would like to help there is always a list of items they are in need of on the website - maybe if you don't want to return with an adopted new "family member" you could just drop off something from their "wish list" while you are visiting
Here is a link to the website (and wish list)
