Ummmm, I don't think you want to know. But, you should remember that they are wild animals and not pets.

Last May the car in front of us hit a stray dog on Jacob's Ladder and kept going. I made my huband drive over the hill and I ran into the vets office to get a Vet to come help it. Before they would even get out of their chair, they asked if I was will to pay for any treatment. Needless to say (the sucker I am) I plunked down my credit card on the desk and drug the Vet out by the arm. The poor puppy had passed away by the time we got back. Imagine my Hubby's surprise when I told him we had to go back to the Vets office to retrieve my credit card  Had that puppy made it, I not only would have had a Vet bill but a bill to find a way to get that puppy back home with me. Not exactly what my Hubby bargained for on vacation.

My point is that they really don't have the funds to save them all. They do the best they can considering STJ has a HUGE stray/wild animal population. If you would like to send a donation, here is the website:

Just want to add that the Animal Care Center on STJ has a program that allows you to adopt an island animal (dog/puppy/cat/kitten) and return with it to the States at the end of your vacation - if you wish to consider it just drop by the center while you are here - they have all the information and ways to make this happen - such a great program :)

It is a great program! I've already discussed this with my Hubby and he knows that when we are ready for another dog, it will be from STJ :)

Pia, don't they also let you "adopt" a dog for the time your on vacation? I've heard that they do this. It would certainly make sense because after spending a week with an animal, who could give it back? I can't see that villa's actually allow you to have pets in them though.

I've not heard about that - only the adopt when you return back to the States. Almost every villa I know does not allow pets so it doesn't make sense. Maybe they mean adopt while you are here in the sense of buy some food etc.

Heres are last adopted cat while on St John. We always seem to adopt a cat for a week and I'm not really a cat person but they make ya feel so guilty can't help but helpem survive. This guy was pretty cool. I named him dickhead because he had a mind of his own and was always getting in the way.

Thanks for the info Pia - I was going to say - I have known so many people to come back to the states from islands with an animal! Strays are, unfortunately, a huge problem since the shelters are only so big and nobody takes them in. We saw SOOO many in Tortola.

The good thing about the STJ shelter is that it is a "no kill" shelter :) sorry I can't say the same for STT :(

If you would like to help there is always a list of items they are in need of on the website - maybe if you don't want to return with an adopted new "family member" you could just drop off something from their "wish list" while you are visiting :)

Here is a link to the website (and wish list)

But to get dack to the donkeys----who would deal with sick, dying or dead donkeys? I remember some years ago when some troublesome donkeys were killed. Where was that? Around Trunk or Caneel, maybe.

Wow Pia! What a great souvenir to take home, an island pet! I wonder how those critters fare up in the northern states? Do you know of anyone who actually took one home?

Capnkirk - you always crack me up. ROFLMAO!!!

I know someone who has taken two dogs from Harbor Island, Bahamas. They have a house down there and its always a fight because they would take a dog home every time they came back but they have to draw the line somewhere(they have two island rescues and two labs from home, which are also rescues).
