Yikes! Once again, I didn't think about the drinking thing too much. I kind of thought that my 21 year old would sneak something to the younger, even though we have strict family rules about underage drinking. What do we do about that? Any suggestions? Also, we were thinking about bringing frozen meats down, but I couldn't figure out the proper procedure for getting a cooler on the plane. I couldn't find enough information about what would be good to take, how to pack it (ice?) and other things. It just seemed to be a bigger headache than I wanted to deal with, so I gave up on the idea. But now...you've got me thinking again...

Everyone has their own method for packing a cooler, but here's what I did. I bought a collapsible cooler with a zipper at the local sporting good store, bought some Technice from Amazon.com and checked the cooler through. I can tell you that all our meat, etc. was still frozen when we got to STJ. We flew from California and it was about 10 hours before we were able to unpack it. Everything was still very frozen. That Technice is great stuff, and the airlines don't have any problem with it. I put a TSA lock on the cooler (even though it would have been very easy to cut it off) just to keep idle hands from going through it while in transit. On the way home, I packed all our booze in it, padded with all the zillions of t-shirts I bought while I was there and slapped FRAGILE - HANDLE WITH CARE stickers on all sides (I brought them with me for this purpose). The TSA had opened it on the way home, but everything was intact and nothing missing or broken.

Welcome aboard citygirl! You'll be an islandgirl before long! We will be there around the same time 8/1-8/8 so I'll be looking out for you newbies trying to drive on the left side of the road!
You will have a blast & Serendip is really close to town! Just watch out for Jacobs Ladder! A fun switchback, corkscrew turn, uphill, right before you turn into the condo!! If you can do that a few times, you will be a pro driving everywhere else!
Since this is your first time on the island, just soak in as much north shore beaches as you can and don't worry about bringing everything you can possibly bring!! Starfish market has everything you will need!! You can have lunch at Trunk and Cinnamon! Grab Ronnie's pizza or Joe's BBQ for yummy take home dinner! Don't miss a St. John sunset if you can't see it at Serendip! Can't go wrong at the Beach Bar or Pastory Gardens for sunsets!! (Beach Bar on 8/2 around 4:30, I think some forum-ites are gathering for wedding/anniv/birthday/whatever you want it to be toast!!! Come on down!!)
The first trip is always the best so take lots of pics to get you by until your 2nd trip to St. John!!
Cheers to the 2 week coundown!
