recs for a substantial side/casserole?

anyone? has to be vegetarian (sorry Pip) and be a good go with for Ham--thinking a pasta based something, but didn't want to do mac n cheese --will have a green salad and bread as well.

My mother brought the most amazing side-type potato dish to Sunday linner yesterday. It was very rich and had comte cheese and whipping cream. It was like a gratin. I will ask her for the recipe if you want to serve potatoes. I know potatoes are not allowed for lots of people these days, but don't potatoes and ham go really well together?

We recently roasted sweet potatoes, parsnips, red potatos and brussels sprouts. I'd have to look up the recipe but it was very simple and the family couldn't stop eating it.
