Provisioning Tips For First Time Sailors

Post by CHM »

How in the world do you begin (and successfully complete) a provisioning list? We have 3 couples plus the Captain for 7 nights. We want to have enough supplies but not over buy. Tips? Suggestions? Items not to forget? Thanks so much in advance! Love that ticker. :D

1. Dark rum
2. Light rum
3. Something to mix with rum

That's good for me. I'll let others add in the "extras".

Nutmeg- 1-2 whole nuts. And a grater (captain may have that). Now you're complete  Sad to say I have not convinced my hubby to do a boat for a week so unable to really help on the provisioning list. Interested in answers though- will keep for when I finally convince him..

A small but important tip. Do NOT bring the boxes you carry the provisions in on the boat. Take the items out of the box and carry on the boat individually. Roaches love to hang out in the corrugated cardboard down there and you do not want them getting onto the boat. Of course, if you are going to do this by just going to the grocery store yourself, then the bags are ok. We have always had the boat stocked for us and this is the tip the provision people told me.

I think you make your list based on your wants and tastes, much like your regular grocery shopping list. So, I'd get together with your group and talk about likes and dislikes and how many meals you'll plan to eat on the boat and how many ashore. I'll share with you our list of provisions (for 2): We plan on 4 on-board dinners (i.e. chicken, fish, steak for grilling, pasta, one night of leftovers) and 4-5 lunches on-board and breakfast on board daily and we usually don't need to buy anything else throughout the week, except maybe more ice and we had minimal leftovers:

Half & Half (or Milk for coffee)
1 doz. Eggs
yogurt
fruit
2 packages - wraps (breakfast and/or lunch wraps)
jelly

butter
olive oil
soy sauce

glade spray

tortilla chips
crackers

salsa & hummus (to go with the chips (above) for snacks)
cheese
avacados (cilantro, jalepeno, peppers)
mango

2 lbs turkey breast

lettuce, tomato, onion
mayonnaise

8-10 jugs water

2 roll paper towel & 1 roll tp? Check boat
dishwasher liquid? Check boat

things being brought from home or mailed down:
homemade banana bread
baggies
coffee
splenda
char crust
STJ Spice cruz bay grill rub
Crystal light individual sticks
granola
trail mix
peanut butter
Stacey's chips
chocolates (truffles for dessert)
coconut snow
nutmeg (grater & balls)
salad dressing
body wash
Shampoo & Conditioner
sunscreen

alcohol:

-Cruzan Regular Rum
-Cruzan Coconut Rum
2 six packs-Red stripe beer
Tequilla
Grand Marnier
2-3 bottles wine

lemons/limes

Mixers:
Diet Coke, diet sprite
juices: orange juice, Pineapple juice, margarita mix
8-10 bags ice

Hope this helps. Have fun! Ali~
