Is it too early to book with USAIR?

We chose USAir for our upcoming trip in January based on price $258 RT plus taxes-We connect through PHL unfortunately. I could have and should have picked connections thru CLT especially since at that time of year there is another flight that leaves from CLT 2 hours after our flight, which gives us a cushion in case we miss our connection from BOS.
Last January we flew AA and our non-stop on the way home left STT 2 hours late and then we had to stop in SJU for fuel. Four hours turned to 7.
Flying is such a gamble-what can appear to be great flight/times can get messed up and complicated itineraries can go smoothly. I don't think that any one airline is better then any other. They all have problems! So price and then times are my guide-not the airline itself unless I'm using miles.
