Where are you staying? As you may have noticed from my previous post, we'll be there in June with the kids. I would be interested in hearing your impressions.[/quote]

I am going here:

It is a dive trip with a dive shop in Kenosha. Maggy from this forum is going too! I will let you know all about it after I get back.

I would echo the locogringo.com recomendation. One of the coolest features I've seen anywhere are the arial pics of nearly the entire coastline. You can get a real feel for the beach characteristics, surrounding area and layout of any resort/casa/inn you might want to stay at with links for nearly all of them right on the arial. VERY revealing.

There are certainly tons of classic AI options there but I think you'll find a more intimate, local flavor further south in the Akumal, Solomon, Tulum, Tankah area.

I was on Isla Mujeres in 1993 and I remember it being very quiet and laid back.

We stayed in one of the Iberostar resorts in 2005. Had a great time. We rented a car for a day trip to Xel-Ha for some snorkeling. We also chartered a trip through the resort which combimed a trip to the Tulum ruins and snorkeling in Akumal Bay. I can not say enough about Akumal. What a lovely place but I understand that it had gotten hit fairly hard by one of the hurricanes. I had also read on the Playa Info forum that the Akumal Beach Resort had a fire some time ago. I haven't been on that forum in a while but I would imagine they have recovered from both events. The Riviera Maya is a different experience than St John but if you go there knowing it will not be the same you should have a good time. Highly recommend spending some time in Playa Del Carmen for some good food.

Gina,
I haven't been on this site for a while, because I have been researching the Riviera Maya too. We finally booked a place this weekend. We are also doing AI because it is our girls trip and it works better for us that way. I did throw out the idea of going to St. John instead of Mexico, but we are only going for 4 nights, so it really isn't enough time. One thing I like about flying into Cancun is we can take an early flight out of here and arrive there by 10:30am. That's great when you only have a long weekend. Good luck with your decision. I will be curious what you decide.
BTW, when are you planning to go? I missed it if you said.

Kygirl, we are going over Christmas break with our teenage boys. Who is going with you? How did you choose your AI?? Since you just did this can you pass along any tips?

I saw that there was going to be a new palace (adventura cove?) opening that mentions teens. It opens in March but I can't find more than that.
