Road conditions since Omar

Post by mcpenguin5 »

When we were there in December 2003, we found the last part of the "road" to Little Lameshur was really, really bad. Our son was determined to make it, so we persevered and were able to get there and back safely, but not without my closing my eyes and praying a lot. The road was deeply carved out by the severe rains that hit shortly before we arrived.
I was wondering if the recent downpours that accompanied Omar had done the same damage. I don't know if we will be heading there again or not this time, but if the road is scoured out again, I might just avoid mentioning that particular beach.
Anyone been down there since the deluge?
Thanks
Kris :D

Haven't been there since the rain, but I don't think the hilly part was paved in '03.Don't remember exactly when it was paved but you shouldn't have any problems although I am just guessing.

No, it wasn't paved in '03. It was a dirt road with numerous ruts and wash-outs. I am glad to hear it has been paved since then. We really liked the snorkeling at Lameshur.
Thanks for letting us know!

it's only partially paved (but the worst part is the paved part--the steepest up and downhill on the curve)
still on the way up to the paved section it can get pretty rutty.....
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

We drove in last week. The gravel part between 107 and the steep concrete section is a bit washed out and bumpy - watch out for the crown of rocks half-way up. Once you get up and over the concrete section, the low road into Little Lameshur is pothole hell. Omar filled all the guts and salt ponds to overflowing, so some of the road is washed out. 4WD low range is too fast, so anticipate a long drive. The best part? It seperates the men from the boys and you'll be the only one on the beach.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

Thanks, Chet. you confirmed my fears. This is the same problem we found in '03. I think that we might take a pass on Lameshur this trip. I'm not sure the enjoyment of that particular beach is worth the anxiety of the drive. I'm glad to hear from someone who has recent experience with the terrain!

We drove in today with no problem... a bit bumpy, and you do need front-wheel drive, if not 4-wheel drive, but it's nowhere near as washed out as it was a few years ago!
