Let's Talk Vegas
We are planning a quick getaway to Vegas in thenext couple of weeks and I need some suggestions on things to do.
We are not big gamblers, mainly because I hate to lose money, but will spend some time in the casinos. I want to go to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon and I know that we will see a Cirque show.
My question is do you have any suggestions for deals on tours and show tickets? How about cheap Vegas-y dining and then one must have meal.
Thanks!

When I went to Vegas, I took the "as cheap as I could get" route! I stayed at the Super 8 on Koval Lane (just off the strip), but it was well within walking distance to the big casinos, and the trolley. The trolley is the best way to get up and down the strip, because it's really cheap! The Casino right there by the Super 8 is Ellis Island. It's old, and I was told that many locals go there. They had THE BEST food though! It was cheap. They have two different sides to their restaurant. One side is micro-brewery patio and you could get a HUGE plate of BBQ chicken and ribs for under $9.
The other side (the dining area) is where they served breakfast and other stuff. They have breakfast for $4. We were also told that they had a steak special for $6, but it wasn't on the menu. You had to just ask for it. We felt like fools the first time, but the waitress took our order and it was GREAT (I'm super picky about steak)! Steak, potato, vegetable, salad, roll for $6! We had it for breakfast every morning!

Hey X, the only suggestion I have is to make the trip to Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. We did the hard hat tour at the dam, and it was very interesting! You actually get in a position where you can look out through a grate right in the middle of the dam wall. That was an easy day trip. The Grand Canyon trip was also one day on a small plane then a bus into the Canyon area.
Have fun, Vegas is a blast.
I was not impressed with the food we had anywhere and it was pricey. The cheap buffets were hard to find and not that great.

Hoover Damn really shouldn't be missed...Not sure if the new bridge over the damn is complete yet - maybe one of our SW peeps can answer that.
As for Vegas...When I was there in April, the most popular (by far) Cirque show was "O" at the Bellagio. Buy your tix in advance if you can. And take a walk down to the Wynn if you get a chance...The place really is amazing (I believe the sister property just opened as well).
As for dining...We ate the the Tao (in the Venetian)...I would say it was just ok (nice atmosphere, food ok). Emeril has a couple of joints that have a great following.
And if you're into heading out to the clubs...Tryst in the Wynn was the best club I've ever been to - and I hear Pure in Caesars is pretty good too (didn't make it to that one, even though we were staying there).
Quick lunch...Buffett has a Margaritaville right across the street from Caesars...Nice to sit outside on the second floor, high above the strip and eat your cheeseburger.

Do you like Thai food? I know there is a place out there that is supposed to have the best Thai food in the country. It's pretty famous, but all I can remember right now is that it is in a strip mall and looks like nothing but once you start eating it is amazing. I'll try and come up with the name for you tomorrow when I am bored at work (
) if Thai is of interest.
Have fun on your trip!

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
Lot's of free stuff to see. The fountains at the Bellagio, Freemont Street experience, T/I show, etc.
We loved "O" and also "Love" if you're into the Beatles.
We go to Michael Mina restaurants and split appetizers, or one main entre. Also Mario Batali has a couple of good restuarants. We'd rather eat small amounts of good food, than large of amounts of really bad food. The buffets are overpriced and not that good.
Off the strip: Green Valley Ranch area is fun shopping and usually has free live music at night. Lake Las Vegas is beautiful. Red Rock Resort is fun also.
We took a craps lesson and that is now the only gambling we do. It seems to be the best odds and is really fun if you have a good group around the table.
Enjoy and good luck!

The website for Love has a 25% off link thru end of Feb. I also thought there was somewhere you could go the day of to purchase discounted tickets?? but have no info.
Would also suggest a drive thru Red Rock Canyon and out to Mt Charleston. We also did the Hoover Dam.
Did dinner at Terribles, cheap and actually really good.
We are hopefully heading out again in March to visit family and will do Zion and head out to LA for the weekend. We were surprised at the variety of things to do and see that have nothing to do with gambling.
Have fun!

I couldn't remember the name of our favorite bar at the Bellagio, but it just came to me. The Fontana Bar jets out over the fountains and is the most romantic place to enjoy an adult beverage.
Unless....the WPT is in town (World Poker Tour), then forget it. For some amazing reason, instead of putting these folks in the basement, they close off the most romantic bar in the joint and give it to them to sit for days and play poker. As you walk through it to the balcony, the smell of soiled Depends just about makes one gag.

Vegas stuff
I've been about 6 or 7 times now and have a few tips for you.
Food:
The only buffets that we enjoy are the ones that you really cannot get your moneys worth from. That being said, the food at the Wynn and Bellagio buffets is very good, but mega pricey for a buffet. We thoroughly enjoyed Olives at the Bellagio. Hold out for a patio table if the weather is conducive. It's a moderately expensive meal by Vegas standards. Another of our favorites is MESA Grill (Bobby Flay's joint in Caesar's Palace). Share a sandwich from Canter's deli.
Shows: Mystere is very good. Plan to see Love in April. Just depends what you like. I like to find the free, top-tier, lounge acts at Fontana Bar, etc. Saw Celine (wife's choice) but it was actually very good. Any headline shows will be $$$
Skip the trolley! yes, it's cheap but really slow. Just walk! This time of year should be pretty nice, and you can practically walk down the strip indoors if you know where you're going!
Check out downtown Fremont street for a taste of "Old Vegas".
