logistics advice

Post by loria »

normally we arrive with at least one checked bag (kids, wine/food) so we are forced to wait it out at the carousel. This trip, I am flying in solo with no bags (hubby will have taken bags and kids and arived at 12:30--gotten the car gotten to cost u less and over on the car barge by the time i arrive at 4:05 8) (or at least be well enroute).
I know the taxis wait to fill up before they leave...how likely is it (i am thinking not very) that i will catch the 5pm ferry from red hook? should i bag the idea and take the 5:30 from CA (guess it's sort of a toss, since i end up in CB about the same time?)
next thing is , i HATE to ask said sainted husband after all he has done to drag his tired ass and the kids back from concordia to pick me up--kids should be in the pool, saint husband should be drinking a beer...SO i was thinking of taking the VITRAN out. the lst time i relied on the VITRAN was ten years ago, and , well reliability wasn't their forte--has it gotten any better? i think ia cab would be a ton to get over to concordia-maybe i will jsut park myself in the beach bar and have them fetch me in the morning......

Sunset today is at 5:47 pm and getting earlier every day - a taxi may be worth the cost - maybe the family coming back into Cruz Bay in their evening meal would work too.

They may not be on the car barge before you arrive. If you allow 1 1/2 hours to claim bags, get the car and drive to Cost u Less, they are beginning shopping at 2. After shopping and the drive to the barge, it could easily be after 3. Then there is the question of whether they get on the next barge or they run out of room.

A private taxi or a lucky break on the other taxi could put you in Red Hook around 4:45.

You might not be far behind them.

Personally I would aim for the 5:30 from CA and take a taxi to your villa or at least a closer pick up point-- poor hubby!!

You wanted to know if VITRAN is any more reliable. The answer is NO. The City/Airport bus runs maybe every hour, so if you miss that bus, there's at least another hour wait before the next one. I'm not sure what time it's supposed to get to the airport, but if it's scheduled for 4:30 or so, then you could chance it. The schedule is posted somewhere online, so Google is your friend here.

But that bus will only take you to town - not Red Hook, so it will only work if you take the CA ferry.

Maybe you could take a cab/VITRAN to the main road that intersects with Airport Road, then take the safari from there to town/Red Hook. That might be your quickest/cheapest option.

yeah, that is what i was thinking, maybe they could meet me at shipwreck for dinner....i am hoping that they get to cost u less by 2-and they'll have a smallish list.--I didn't want him to wait for me to get on the barge--and having used Vitran on St j to get back and forth to salt pond (years ago).
so it's either cab or hitchhike!
--i really hate the idea of him shouldering all this on his own (particularly since i am the driver in the family and actually can figure out HOW to get to cost u less!)--hell they may be lost in st thomas when i arrive!
well i will make it up to him somehow
