Rental Car for more than a day?

We've been told "to rent a car for a day and drive around the island". From the recommendations I'm seeing for snorkling, I'm thinking we need a car for more than a day???!! Staying in Christainsted. Please confirm. Is it better to rent before we arrive or does it matter?

FTC - I see you're staying in Christiansted on St. Croix. Most of what you are seeing on this forum regarding snorkeling spots pertains to St. John. I think, though, that you've got it right - you generally need a car for more than a day. St. Croix is a big island and if you want to see all from F'Sted on the west to Point Udall on the east and snorkel off many beaches you are going to need a car. I'd recommend Centerline - they will meet you at the airport and then drive you about 2 blocks away to finish up your rental at their satellite office on the airport road (nice, no airport tax on your rental this way). If you are traveling with a group, you will be back from the airport to get them by the time the luggage from your flight is hitting the belts. I would arrange before you arrive to make sure you have a car waiting - depending upon your dates, cars could be scarce. Check on the parking situation where you are staying in C'Sted, though, as parking can sometimes be tough in town.

I've been to St Croix...its a HUGE island with SOOO much to see. I HIGHLY recommend a car for your entire trip. Cab fares are outrageous...Don't get turned off when leaving the airport. The oil refinery is an eye sore, however it is a BEAUTIFUL island and the locals are warm and friendly...Be sure to have dinner at Tutto Bene...AMAZING italian restaurant...
