Peter Peak,'67

Post by parafins »

Here's a pic of the William Callahan's home on Peter Peak overlooking Cinnamon Bay.This too was featured in the Jan.'68 of National Geographic. Here's the quote beside the pic."Poinsettia's fiery pinwheels star the garden of retired exporter William Callahan on Peter Peak,St.John.Patio of the Callahan home looks down on the blue infinity of Cinnamon Bay." I wonder, but doubt this home still stands today?ImagePicture by James L Stanfield...Parafins

Actually the house is still there, It wasn't really Peter Peak, but the first house in the Catherineberg area, in the Peter Peak direction. It's the one right up on top with the coconut palm -you can see it very well from Cinnamon. Belongs to the National Park now, was used as the Superintendent's residence for a few years, but the current Sup. prefers Little Plantation, between Solomon and Honeymoon.
The poinsettias aren't there anymore....
Bill Callahan built the first Catholic church in Cruz Bay, and the new church still has the same name: "Our Lady of Mt. Carmel"---Mrs. Callahan's first name was Carmel.
Maybe I should market a St. John trivia game?

I always appreciate the contributions from longtime residents with long memories.

In the same vein, I'm really enjoying Gerald Singer's blog.

First of all, I'd love to see that house in person. It looks really neat!

And Hugo! You continue to amaze me with your knowledge. You should seriously consider coming up with some kind of St. John trivia game!
