Housekeeping note - new registration system, and a question

Post by Anthony »

We have installed the ReCaptcha spam catcher, and registration is self provisioning again. What does this mean?

Well - we hope that it works to not only cut down the spam registrations (which is now taking up more than hours of each of my day), but also to increase the amount of users by making registration simpler and faster (you get the confirmation email, and you can then click the activation link - no more waiting for me).

With that said - how do you all feel about also using this kind of system to allow people to guest post - i.e. posting WITHOUT registering? Just throwing it out there - let me know what you think.

I would still have people register before posting. There's just no downside.

I think people should have to register first. I am on several other forums and the anonymous postings are usually trolls or posters that want to stir up trouble with out being found out.

Anonymous postings are a source of pain on vinow and TTOL. On TTOL most of the unregistered posters are registered users who forgot to login. As X said, angry trolls are a real problem. I like captchas, but I REALLY like having real active email accounts that must confirm registrations.

One of the things about this forum that keeps it going with a good sense of community is the idea that real people own their words and are responsible for them.

More traffic is not better traffic.

I have seen what happens when unregistered guests are allowed to post, and it's not pretty. If I were moderating a forum, I would absolutely not allow unregistered users to post.

I think any prospective new member, before being granted such status, should be required to donate to a fund that pays for drinks at the forum gatherings at the Beach Bar.

But if you can't do that, at least make them register first...

I agree - Register! And donate to BB Forum Gathering and possibly take a test! LOL! I have to say most people that don't register, but post are stirring the simmering pot! This board is alot friendlier than most (trust me, I've lurked everywhere!) and I agree with Rick, it is because real people are responsible for their words. It also weeds people out and the only ones posting are truly interested in the subject matter. It's not to say they don't pop up occaisionally, but it is rare - not the norm. Just my 2 cents (sense?)
