Need some positive vibes.....

Post by LysaC »

Hello again formumites!

I hope y'all enjoyed my live reports from STJ. Now I need to ask y'all for some help.

Some background:

We almost did not make it to STJ a few weeks back.

Our dog, Dallas, was very sick over Thanksgiving and was eventually diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. We were to leave on Fri Dec 1st and he went into sugery Tues Nov 28th to have the tumor removed from his intestines. Although we trust & love our house/petsitter, we were reluctant to leave our dog post-surgery. Our decision to fly out on that Fri was made due to the fact that our dog was not only recovering well but he was almost 100% by Thursday night. The only thing we had to wait for was the biopsy.

Our dog did very well with the petsitter! This person isn't just a petsitter but a trusted longtime friend and canine professional (like my hubby) so we knew our dog was in the best hands possible.

The vet called and left a message while we were away that the biopsy of the tumor was back. I told my husband that we should wait to call for the results until we were back from vacation...just in case.

We found out today that the results are the worst they could be. If our dog does not respond to chemo, he may only be with us for another month or so. He is only 7 years old.

I know this is a VI forum but I'm asking for positive vibes from anyone and everyone!

Please, all you dog lovers, say a little prayer for our dog, Dallas. We'd like to have him around as long as possible.

Thank you all very much :).....

LysaC

Thank you all very much!

waterguy: Yes, Dallas is very confused. He doesn't understand why we seem so upset around him. Hubby and I just had a long talk about how we have to act normal. If we keep acting upset, he's going to think he's done something wrong and that's not fair.

Hubby just lost his grandfather to cancer this past fall so it's really hitting him hard. Honestly, this just really sucks.

Lysa - Although I'm a cat person, and I have lost a cat to cancer, it doesn't matter if you have a cat or a dog or a turtle... they're all our babies. My heart and prayers go out to Dallas and to you. My cat, Bob, is also sending good kitty vibes!

LisaC - I can totally relate to your situation as our second trip to STJ was one that was planned when my dog was "ok". I cried all the way to the airport even though I was leaving him with my SO's son who lives with us and had grown up with him and was probably the only person I would have trusted to take care of my dog.

He made it the trip but did go downhill after that and has since crossed the "rainbow bridge" to where all of the other animals are with no ailments.

Mine had a degenerative disorder that took 2 and 1/2 years to get him to that point but the one thing I did when I first learned about it all was to treat every day like it was his last and enjoy my time with him.

If you need someone to talk, feel free to email me personally. I can tell you that talking to all of my friends and clients who were also dog people (I am a dog trainer) helped me get through all of it from diagnosis till the end.

All of you will be in my and Rudy's (my boxer) prayers, please keep us posted.

p.s. you may want to check into accupuncture and homeopathy to help ease the pain Dallas may be in. I seriously think it helped Brutus (my last boxer) in a lot of ways. His regular vet couldn't believe how well he did with his disorder.

OK I don't have any dogs or cats. I have only fish that rarely get fed, but I wish you the best as I saw what Nothintolose went through with Brutus.

I have never had a truly sick child which is how you see Dallas but I hope that you know how sorry I am to hear about the cancer. Your family is in my prayers. Please keep us all posted on his progress.

Nothingtolose:

Thank you so much and I am very sorry to hear about your loss...especially after such a long battle.

My husband is also a dog trainer and we have a doggy daycare and boarding facility at our house. One of his closest and longest clients just lost her Ridgeback to highly aggressive skin cancer and another client has a Boxer going through chemo now (they gave her six months and she's now eight months in :)). We've been part of our clients and their dogs lives through bad and good and they are all there now for us. It's really amazing and very therapeutic. Especially for hubby (ya' know, men and emotions don't really mix well)!

Again, I want to thank you all for your positive responses and I apologize again for the Off Topic thread (for those of you who aren't animal people).

I owe it to Dallas to ask for all the prayers we can give him. He has been nothing but loyal and has protected hubby and I without question. He has only asked in return that we feed him (a lot) and scratch him in that spot right above his tail (you know ths spot)!

I'll keep you all posted once we see how he reacts to the chemo.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Lysa -

I, too, want to add my prayers for you and your beloved dog. I have a cocker spaniel who is almost 13 and I truly dread the day that I know awaits us. He is totally deaf, but enjoys life just the same. He is my first "baby" - we saw him in a pet store window and couldn't resist!

Big dog hugs from George and his "mom" are headed your way.
