back from Florida

Post by sea-nile »

I just got back from Florida - a week with my kids. We kind of dodged TS Fay, but I did not get to dive and my son did not get to go fishing and we could not go parasailing. We were at the beach every day though even Tuesday - supposed hurricane day, where we had to evacuate. We still had fun and maybe I will do an off topic trip report if I find time.

Sea-Nile,
We were in Boynton Beach for a week. Just returned yesterday. The weather was horrid. Tornado watches last Saturday night. It finally was sunny on our day of departure although the storm was still wreaking havoc farther north. Our plane had to divert 176 miles east over the ocean to avoid the storm and it STILL was turbulent. They wouldn't serve any drinks and I desperately needed my Bloody Mary!! The bumps lasted about an hour. We came ashore in Wilmington, NC. From that point until Baltimore, it was smooth and clear.

We had plenty to do in Florida as my in-laws are elderly and needed some maintenance work done around their home. However, we plan on returning for a little sun and fun in November.

I just got back from Orlando. Was down there for work, hosting a group of 650 people. Great weather for an incentive trip! Disney World was spared from the flooding, but got lotsa' wind n' rain. The sky was beautiful and blue with white puffy clouds when we left yesterday, but got to Orlando airport and the skies opened up with thunder & lightning! It was crazy... no planes coming in or going out. Our 4:30 plane was diverted to Tampa and we finally got on another flight out around 6:30. Totally missed our connection in Dallas & had to spend the night. Got back to Orange County at 9 a.m. this morning.

The only problem was, I didn't take my own advice... I didn't pack a change of clothes or toothbrush in my carry-on. Hell, I wasn't going thru San Juan PR, so wasn't worried about it. First thing I did when I got home was hit the shower & electric toothbrush!

I feel so bad for all the people in Florida who are flooded. 6 ft. of rain in Daytona!! That's amazing. No levees broke, it's just rain!

Here are some pictures of our yard and street after Fay had her way with us for a few days...

This is normally a small retention pond in the back yard...

Here's a view from just outside of the front door:

And here's one looking down the stream, er, street!(That's my son Jason on the pool raft)

Wow Steve, you live on one of those streets I saw on TV! Did you hear about that lady who had a manatee in her front yard???

Has the water receded yet?

Hi Margo,

The water receeded to a reasonable level (in most places) within two or three days after the storm passed. Unlike some of the areas around the panhandle and south Georgia and Alabama we weren't in the middle of a drought here - it rained almost every day in July and early August, so the ground was pretty saturated before Fay meandered by.

There were all kinds of stories of marine life in people's yards, I just thought it was interesting to watch people canoeing and kayaking down the streets!

We went to the beach the day Fay was supposed to hit and this is the worst it got on Venice Beach.

Wow, augie, I am glad your house did not flood! That "little pond" looks like it was getting awfully close.

Hey Steve
Glad that the water didn't come any closer to your house. You might want to keet the scuba gear near the front door next time. Just kidding buddy - glad you came out OK. We still need to get together before the water turns cold. Talk to you soon.
