Looking for a review on EbbTide Villa and other info
Does anyone have any information about Ebb Tide Villa? This is our first time renting a villa and I am a little nervous, we usually stay at the Westin.
How is the snorkeling in Chocolate Hole, is it worth the extra money to be waterfront in Choc Hole?
I keep reading in the trip reviews about the Bugs/Noseeums, we always go in January and have never experienced bugs. Is January
the bug free month?
Do they sell Oliveo or Smart Balance (fake healthy butters)in the SJ markets?
Also can you get Absolut Au Currant (Currant Vodka by Absolut)?
Any information will be appreciated!

Hi Betty- I know first-hand about Ebb Tide. It's a wonderful place but it ain't the Westin. It is not a hotel with room service. It is VERY private, with a pool you can get in anytime you want without crowds. Chocolate Hole is great snorkeling, esp if you get out towards the mouth of the bay where the big rocks are. There are/was a resident ray in the shallows in the eel grass and as you get deeper (past 6-8ft) the fish become even more plentiful. The beach front is unique; noseeums not a problem in the house with the breeze but they can be a problem on any beach when the air is still. Don't know about vodka but whatever is stateside is generally available on St. John-you just pay to have it there. I'm sure you'll have fun and unique time. Razzer

Personally, we've only booked 'seaside' once and really have not found it worth the extra cost.
St. John is not a "staying on the beachfront" type of place. After 15 years of traveling there, IMHO, we really prefer staying up higher where the breezes sweep away any bugs, you get awesome, incredible, "fixed in your memory forever" type of views, it's private, and yet you're close to everything, type of locations for villas.
But having said that, wherever you stay, if it meets your needs, you will spend every day visiting one or more of the awesome beaches of St. John. After all these years, I STILL have not gotten to, or done, everything I've wanted to. I do indeed LOVE this island.
I think if you've already placed your deposit, you should just look forward to your trip with anticipation and pleasure. Chocolate Hole is in general a very good location. You might get sunset views (dusk, immediately following sunset, is my own particular favorite time of day for sitting on a villa deck with awesome views and just feeling the peace wash over me).
You WILL have a great trip. Don't worry; be happy

Betty: I just returned from STJ on Saturday and one of the magazines that I came across while there had a full spread feature article on Ebb Tide. Unfortunately, I didn't bring it home. I'm sure the villa rental company that you're dealing would could find you a copy of it. I actually read the article and it sounded and looked like a pretty good villa rental. I do recall seeing "fake" butter at the starfish market, as well as some fancy vodkas. I'm sorry but I'm not a vodka drinker so I can't be more precise, but I do recall that there were some fancy flavored ones there. As previously posted, a villa is definitely not the Westin. It all depends on your personal preference. I absolutely love staying in a private villa but have decided that when I take my teens on one of our STJ trips, we'll probably stay at the Westin just so there are more activites for them and hopefully other teens.
STJ - I "get it"
Thank you everyone for your helpful information. We have rented the villa Ebb Tide in January and I will write a review for future renters. We are staying at the Westin 2 days prior moving to the villa so I will also post a review about the hotel portion of the trip. This forum has been so informational on planning our trip, that I hope I can help someone else in the same way. Thank you all again!
