2nd-Time Trip Report Day 4

St. John Trip Report Day 4: Tues. June 3

Up at 5:40 with the toddler, sigh. We head to Cinnamon Bay this morning, arriving by 8:10. We are glad that Toddler continues to be very excited to go to the beach every day, it makes it fun for all of us.

It's a beautiful sunny day and as usual, we're the first ones on the beach. Right away Husband and I snorkel over to Peter Bay. We did this last time and enjoyed seeing the airplane wreck and a huge barracuda herding fry against the rocks. We follow Feet, Fins advice and walk all the way down the beach, get in to snorkel around the rocks, walk down Little Cinnamon, get back in to snorkel around and get out on Peter Bay. Last time we did this, we took our time and didn't think it was too exerting. This time we were in more of a hurry with Toddler and Grandma waiting back on the beach, so it seemed a bit more strenuous. Plus we didn't see too much of interest fish-wise. If I went back and was short on time, I think I'd cut out the Peter Bay part. The water level was pretty low and the current was a bit strong, so we were both pretty tired out by the time we returned.

After a break building sandcastles with Toddler, Husband and I headed out to swim around the cay. I had second thoughts since I was still kind of tired from the first snorkel foray, but it was worth it. We saw lots of cool fish and coral. The waves were kicking up on the back side of the cay, but the west point on the outside was really cool. Last time we were here there were tiny jellyfish around the cay stinging us, so I was happy not to have a repeat of that experience. There were a whole lot of sea urchins. On our swim back in to the beach we saw a small barracuda hanging around.

We once again appreciated using the shower facilities to de-sand ourselves and the toddler, then headed to the villa for lunch. We stopped at the Deli Grotto to pick up sandwiches, the first time we'd been in there. It was really nice with yummy sandwiches and lots to pick from. Husband and I liked ours while Grandma wasn't as happy, I think.

Unfortunately Toddler got a cat nap on the way home, so he wouldn't go down for a nap after lunch. So he and I hit the pool while Husband & Grandma napped. It was very, very sunny and hot in the middle of the day and the deck surface was sizzling, so we had to wear shoes around the pool (a downside of that pretty dark wood stain). We took naps later in the day and then got ready to head out for dinner.

We picked Pastory Gardens for dinner because it seemed child-friendly. The service was nice & friendly and the food was pretty good - kind of normal American-style food. Husband had seafood chowder and jerked mahi mahi, Grandma and I both had mahi mahi fish & chips and Toddler had chicken strips & fries. The deck was closed, so we didn't get too much of a view from dinner.

We didn't take many pictures this day, but here are a few of the restaurant.

After dinner we looked around for a place to get ice cream but the obvious ice cream places were closed, so we just went to Starfish to pick some up and have it at home. We tried to put the toddler down for bed later this evening so he'd hopefully sleep later in the morning, but no luck! Ah well...

Another great installment! We've never been to Pastory Gardens, will have to check it out next time. How is the parking there? There seems to be more and more problems finding places to park.....anywhere on St. John!!

Ah, the dreaded fall asleep in the car before getting to the house, I know it well!

In 07, we could get our son to fall asleep on the beach under an umbrella. By 08, those days were over.

We are gearing up for 09. Swimming lessons start next week.

Parking at Pastory was no problem at all, once we figured out how to find the lot. You kind of had to snake around the building. You know St. John, it's hard to figure out if you're driving by an abandoned building or a thriving business, they sometimes look a lot alike.

Yes, we didn't make that car cat nap mistake again! Grandma and I were put in charge of plying him with food and tickles to keep him awake until we got home. It was a challenge! Hope the swimming lessons go well! Ours still doesn't like to put his face underwater, we figure maybe next summer...
