AA to charge $15 for overweight/oversize carryon bags
AA to charge $15 for overweight/oversize carryon bags
American is the first airline to take the baggage fees to their logical conclusion - charging for overweight/oversize carryon bags. It was inevitable, really.
With any luck we won't be seeing any more of those 26" wheeled bags that take up a whole overhead section and are too heavy for the passenger to lift over their head. Moo!
Sweet Christine and I will still be sharing a single carryon-legal bag and a snorkel bag.
Cheers, RickG

Oh geez, I knew it was coming.
I've always traveled carry-on only and my bag measures in at 44 linear inches, very close to the max of 45. I always get nervous that my bag is too stuffed and they will pull out that tape measure any second. I guess they probably will now that they're cracking down. My last trip to St. John in April, I had my fins sticking out of the bag and I had my 5 yr old's life jacket just dangling from the bag! hmmm...I will miss the good 'ol days of traveling. This July, I'm bringing basically a couple pairs of clothes and making use of the washing machine at Maho. If I can just convince my 12 yr old niece that's coming with that she CAN survive with just ONE suitcase!!

Don't shoot me, but I actually applaud this move given that they are charging for checked bags. When the airlines started announcing the fees, my husband and I started talking about how everyone would try to squeeze even more into carry-on plus bring bigger cases on board, making the whole cabin and boarding experience even worse than it already is.
But, if it is over-sized, I think they should make the person check the bag and pay the checked bag fee. What is the point of having size limits if they aren't enforcing them? I hate it when I get on a plane and can't find space for my backpack, which is way under limits, because the overheads are filled with wheelies that are over the size limits.

I totally agree!! Otherwise it will take almost 2 hrs to board a plane/deplane, etc. if everyone is trying to stuff their "oversized" carryon bags into those tiny (already stuffed) overhead bins. Unfortunately now we have to pay for everything.snorkeler525 wrote:Don't shoot me, but I actually applaud this move given that they are charging for checked bags. If my carry-on gets "flagged", I'm going to politely ask that the flight attendents get their bags measured too. Ever notice how much they carry on? I've seen some right-at-the-max bags plus two more bags. Mine is close the the max and yes it is stuffed, but it's no larger than the crew's carry-ons and I've never had a problem placing it in the overheads, but the carry-on nazi patrols make me nervous.

We are hitting the Soup Nazi level of customer service - If you understand the rules and behave properly then you'll get exactly what you want, and nothing more.
I really think there is a better solution. Full Fare Coach gets free checked bags and as many carryons as they want. Discount coach pays for everything. On Spirit Air, the cheapest available flight from DC on 11/1, the Full Fare Coach ticket is $1,028 and the Discounted Coach Fare is $456.
I'll choose Discounted Coach Fare and buy the additional services that I wish to use a la carte.
Cheers, RickG

tah,
i'm with you. i say the airlines should require the pilots to check their big catlog bags with all the flight info in the hole too! all joking aside, i don't believe i ever saw a flt attent use an overhead bin unless plenty of empty seats and never saw one slow down deplaning due to their bag size. i have seen quite a few though that should have been drawing their soc sec checks like me and bride!
with jet fuel what it is, i'm all for fares tied to passenger and their luggage's weight. my and the bride's fares would go down. i'm also for surcharging for widebodied people who take up part of my seat space and then complain because it's so crowded and so expensive. yes more expensive than few yrs ago but adjusted for inflation a whole lot less than fares i was paying for trips in 70's when we could first afford to fly.
yes, it's getting expensive to get to and stay in usvi but relatively i believe my grocercies and ground transportation expenses (gas) have increased a higher percentage than plane fares and vi lodging.

I agree with the enforcement of the carry on rules.. Long, Long overdue. As far as the flight attendants and other crew members, Do you guys get any perks at your jobs? I mean come on. 4 or 5 crew members don't a full overhead compartment make. It's their every day job. They don't make the rules and besides who says the carry on rules apply to them. I'm certain there are many things they do or are allowed to do that the passengers can't.
BOB
I noticed on my recent flights that the flight attendants put their luggage in a closet area, not in the overheads. I also noticed that passengers carried on WAY more than they should be allowed to. One lady and her man had 3 large carry on bags each.
Our stuffed backpacks fit nicely under the seat in front of us. We had to check our carry on luggage because of the overhead bin hogs. I won't even bother trying carry on only again!

I'm with all of you who agree that oversized bags should be checked. We all have a choice to bring more or less, and just like shipping a box somewhere, a bigger/heavier bag should cost more. I'd rather go RickG's way and pay a cheaper fare and get charged extra for things like over sized bags.
papabou, I'm with you on charging people who take up more than one seat! I pay for a whole seat, arm rest to arm rest, and I don't want someone else to take up some of that already tight space! (Unless I invite them to, which only applies to my family. And maybe George Clooney, but he probably doesn't fly coach like I do.) I always thought it would be nice if the arm rest had a little divider thingie that you could pull up and separate yourself and have something to lean on other than a stranger's shoulder. (Again, if George is next to me, I'd be ok if he slept on my shoulder. Even if he drooled.)

As Americans get fatter and fatter, the comfort level in coach has become challenging. My wife and I are thin which helps, but I still hate 757s with the 3 seats/3 seats design. But, I travel those on FF miles so at least I know I'm not paying to be squashed if a large person sits next to me. No offense to large folks. I realize some people are just meant to be big.chicagoans wrote:

Big people? Solution: The airlines are saying they are cutting seats, so why not remove the existing ones and replace them with bigger (and fewer) seats? Simple.
Over sized carry ons? Solution: Only one small carry on per passenger, must be the size of a brief case. All others are checked. Simple.
The days of traveling carry on only are pretty much over folks...deal with it. If the airlines start losing baggage.....they pay you, turn about is fair play. Simple.
Come to think about it, maybe it's a good thing I'm not in a position to make those decisions....

The liver is evil, it must be punished!

When I travel for work, I take my laptop with me. To get around the one laptop or purse and one carryon limit, I put my purse in one of my other bags because I carry a small purse. I once got yelled at TSA because he saw me put my purse in my laptop bag and he thought I was circumventing the rules. That, I think, is ridiculous. (This was back before all the rules when I ALWAYS traveled carryon only.)
All I know is that the airlines say they are charging for bags so they don't have to raise ticket prices, but my EXACT same flight that I took to STT last year is more than twice what I paid last year. More than twice!
I think the airlines are getting to be ridiculous. They have us where they want us, and they take advantage of that. It's not fair, but I don't know that there's anything we can do about it.
I don't mind paying for a bag on Spirit because I've always paid for bags on Spirit and their prices are still low. They just don't fly out of Nashville. I just think that it's ridiculous that the other airlines have raised their rates to the point that it's ridiculous and then add another $25, $50, etc on for luggage.
