New reduced ferry times RH and CA and ticket price increase.

Post by Pia »

From todays paper :(

Just thought you all might want to know and please read that they have cut ferry runs to and from CA and Red Hook.

"Starting July 6, commuters are going to be seeing fewer ferry runs from St. Thomas to St. John and less money in their pockets after paying their fares, thanks to a ruling by the Public Services Commission during an emergency meeting Thursday on St. Thomas. An extra $1.10 fuel surcharge will be tacked onto all passenger tickets, including regular $5 tickets, $3 commuter tickets, $2.50 bulk tickets, $1.50 student tickets, $1.25 senior tickets, and the $1 fare for children under age 12."

"Until the beginning of November, both Transportation Services and Varlack Ventures will only be making runs during the week from Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie at 7:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m., and from Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. During the weekend, the Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie ferry will run at 11:15 a.m., with a return trip running at 1 p.m. The 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. runs from Cruz Bay to Red Hook have also been eliminated, along with the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. runs from Red Hook to Cruz Bay."

Thanks for the heads up, Pia. Do you know how much (or the name of one) a water taxi would cost if we should arrive late?

Thanks Pia...So, other than the late runs for Red Hook being cancelled, there are no other schedule changes for the Red Hook ferry service, to and from?
July 2003 - Honeymoon at The Westin
July 2004 - Glenmar, Gifft Hill
July 2005 - Arco Iris, Fish Bay
December 2007 - Dreamcatcher, GCB
July 2008 - Ellison Villa, VGE

Thanks Pia. We are downtown ferry folks and always plan our flights around the ferry times. Well, guess what day we arrive, yep, July 6. I guess we will be getting a tour of St. Thomas in order to get a ferry that day. There are certaibly worse things in life! I tried to talk hubby into renting on St. Thomas and taking the car ferry over, but his last car ferry experience a few years back made him vow to only rent on St. John.

Thanks Pia, 4 of our group will have to change their original plans and not leave via CA.

Take care,

Ok, St. Johns Tradewinds has the schedule slightly different than St. Thomas Source. So I wonder which one is right. If I read it correct, St. Thomas Source said The 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. runs from Cruz Bay to Red Hook have been eliminated, along with the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. runs from Red Hook to Cruz Bay. St. John Tradewinds says the 8 pm and 10 pm from from Cruz Bay to Red Hook and the 7 pm and 9 pm from Red Hook to Cruz Bay has been cut.

Can anyone else make sense of this? I always take the 8 pm ferry from Cruz Bay to Red Hook on Sundays (when we can make it), so is it cut or not? Help please.

Here is what St. John Tradewinds says:

The following schedule changes were approved by the PSC to be in effect July 6 until November 1:

• Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie — weekdays, 7:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.
• Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay — weekdays, 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
• Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie — weekends, 11;15 a.m.
• Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay — weekends, 1 p.m.
• Cruz Bay to Red Hook — 5:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and every hour on the hour until midnight except 8 p.m and 10 p.m.
• Red Hook to Cruz Bay — 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., every hour on the hour except 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

OK I think the STT paper is wrong and here's why

It lists......

"Red Hook to Cruz Bay — 6 a.m. to 11 p.m" but we all know the last ferry from Red Hook is at midnight and the last ferry from STJ is at 11pm so they have them switched.

It also states the first ferries from Cruz Bay as being "5:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and every hour on the hour" but those are the ferry times from Red Hook not STJ as the first ferry from STJ to Red Hook is at 6am (which is the time it states as being from Red Hook - if this all makes sense  )

Only time will tell :)

It was $5.00 per person but now will be $6.10 - can you imagine the nightmare it will be having the ticket sales person need to hand back .90c in change   If I were a bettin' gal I would say it's not gonna happen and she will run out of change within the first 5 passengers.

Reminds me of a funny story. We're trapped at the Puerto Plata airport in April. We went to the sad little snack counter to get our daughter something to eat. They price it in local currency, but make you pay the same total in $US. So, the guy in line before me sees it rung up his order to 7.24. He hands her a $10. He gets back $2.

"Where's my change"
"No change"
"But..."
"No change."
"It says $7.24"
"No change"

Yea...I can't wait to do that again in August. the desk attendant who pockets all those $.90 is going to get rich fast.

I can see the posters now:

As far as we know the car ferry will remain unchanged but, do know, that the Captain Vic is currently out of service (has been for some time) and by the looks of things will not be up and running anytime soon, so we are down to two companies right now.
