Key West ?

Post by onthelake »

Well I couldn't get a good flight to St John, so I'm going to Florida in a few weeks. My SIL and I are going to Key West for a few days to check it out.

Any suggestions - Snorkel trip, restaurants, bars and anything we must not miss?????

Thanks
Pam

The crazy scene down at the wharf at sunset.
Anybody who has been probably has a story.
Here's mine: male bagpipe player and male dancer in kilts, playing and dancing. The dancer does a serious twirl. We look at each. Did we just see what we thought we saw? Well another twirl confirmed the "dancer" had nothing on underneath the kilt. Later all the young ladies on a boat removed their tops as they sailed by.
This was like 20 yrs ago - dont know if its still this crazy on a regular basis.

We were there last December and it was still that crazy. We saw lots of different sights while there! Be sure to rent scooters one day. It's a great way to see everything.
Good places to eat were Hogs Breath and Conch Republic plus many more. There is a place where they make sandles that were really cheap and comfortable but I can't remember the name of it. I'm sure if you ask someone will tell you.
There are lots of standup comedians at bars on Duval St. which is very intertaining.
It was nice to go one time but I don't think I want to go back.

We did a snorkel to John Pennekamp PArk that rivaled snorkeling in St John much to our surprise! The fish life was abundant w/ healthy coral life. I never dreamed the colors and fish life could compete w/ the colors I have seen in STJ so we were very impressed. There are many tours to take you out to the underwater park, but we used these guys:

The restaurants in Key West have quite the range from bars to some mighty fine dining. Some we like are:
Pepe's on Caroline St (outdoor bar/restaurant)
Blue Heaven (outdoor bar/restaurant)
915 (tapas style dining)
Opera (Pricey but good)
Michaels (best meal we had!)

The sunset party at Mallory Sq is a widely held tradition and a little something for everyone if you like an atmosphere like that. We saw a green flash at sunset once, so that was cool!

One of these trips we would like to take a trip out to Ft Jefferson @ the Dry Tortugas, 70 miles west of Key West and check out the snorkeling there...maybe someone else knows something about that?

there's also a hotel on Duval that has a rooftop bar which is another great option for sunset. we did Duval once then hit the bar every other night we were there ;)

It might be a Crowne Plaza but I don't recall
