Sweet Plantains and Aqua Bistro

We are probably going to arrange for a sitter at least 2 nights during our stay. One of those nights will definitely be spent at Zozo's. The other is a toss up but probably will be either Sweet Plantains or Aqua Bistro. Shoot I forgot I want to go to La Tapa! Decisions decisions ...

Are either Sweet Plantains or Aqua Bistro kid friendly? Is one kid friendlier than the other (that way we can go there on one night when we don't have a sitter?) if we plan to go early - say 6ish.

Both are (as long as they don't scream their heads off all night )

I took a group to their villa on Saturday and saw them all at Sweet Plantains on Monday at 7:45pm - 3 sets of parents, 2 x 4 year olds and 1 x 3 year old - they were sitting outside having a great time

Personally I don't think the kids would like the food at Sweet Plantains. I didn't care for it. They use unusual spices. Aqua Bistro is more kid friendly but their menu features a lot of seafood. They do have burgers also though.

Aqua Bistro is very kid friendly. The night we were there for dinner there were a bunch of island kids hanging out with their parents, ranging in age from infant to about 7 years old, traveling up and down the stairs between their tables at the restaurant/spots at the bar and the TOY STORE (just a warning for you! ) located next to Big Belly Deli, dancing to the live music in between.

I am less concerned about the food choices ... our kids being of diverse ethnicity are pretty adventurous eaters and will try things that a lot of adults I know won't eat. No expectations is a good thing sometimes.

Thanks for the tips on the two restaurants. Liamsaunt I would feel more comfortable for sure with local kids running around having fun ... that way I don't worry so much about my own who are typically very well behaved but still are kids.

I just hate getting that look. Parents, you know, the one you get when you set foot on a plane. LOL.

And I love that TOY STORE -- Little fish. They were SO nice to my little ones on the last trip, Ella even got a little free toy. Very nice people!

Christy from Book-It V.I. owns both Big and Little Fish. They gave us a $25 off gift certificate instead of a welcome basket. Very nice people.

Ha! Yeah, I know the look. Our son travels like a pro. His father, on the other hand, is the one that needs to be medicated to avoid meltdowns.

My daughters liked all of the Coral Bay eateries. Shipwreck Landing was a hit and is probably my second favorite restaurant on island, after La Tapa. Sweet Plantains is fun, but (said in a snarky food critic voice) I thought some of their spicing choices were not well integrated and were rather jarring. That being said (now in RickG's voice), its a nice spot with good service and about the same price as a Fairfax County fine dining restaurant.

Concordia is another consideration. Its an interesting different location, but they usually start serving dinner earlier and are about done by 7:30. They have ramps and would be grandparent friendly.

When I was there in August we went to Aqua Bistro to hear my friend Mark play. We brought my friend's kids, 8 and 5, and we were with a bunch of other families with kids ranging from 3 to 12. They had a blast.
They were all playing together and instead of eating what we ordered for them, they all begged for $ to get ice cream from the small store there. (no surprise there)

I would vote it as very kid friendly.

flip-flop, Aqua Bistro is walkable from SeaBiscuit. From Bay House you can watch the whole access road. I let my 10 year old walk it once because she wanted something from Lilys. She's an early riser, so we were doing the Coral Bay morning walk about a couple of times too.

The food at Aqua Bistro was fine. We ate there the night the Blues Fest party was at Shipwreck Landing, before heading over there. Its just not memorable. Its nice.

I would go with Aqua Bistro as well...and then pick up a pint of ben and jerry's at Lily's to bring back to the villa for dessert!!

Aqua Bistro was great when they first opened. Red, from Chateaux Bordeaux[sp], was the chef then. They've changed a few times. The bar is a good hang out fot the local construction crowd in the afternoon. It's kid friendly, plus you can have shopping as a diversion. DON'T MISS Syzgy Gallery, which is now in Cocolobo, upstairs from Aqua Bistro. Barr Lewis has done a great job with the gallery, and her web sight. I still think of Shipwreck as being a easy to deal with small kids. I also enjoyed Sweet Plantains, though I think of the food as being, shall we say, rather mature for little kids. Man, Flipper, I'm feeling the green eye of jealousy while writing this!

You know its your fault that we are staying in Coral Bay this time. I am thinking we are gonna love it!
