On island in 2 weeks, some specific questions..

Post by LS »

Hello all,
First I have learned alot from lurking in this forum, thanks to everyone. Going to be on St. John on May 29th, my wife and I have been to STJ twice in the last 2 years, this time we are bringing 11 other people with us ;) Here are 4 questions I still need answered:

1. Where is the car ferry on St Thomas? I have been to STT twice now but did not use the car ferry, directions or location on google earth would be helpful

2. I have seen people say they love snorkeling Chocolate Hole.. Where is the best place to get in the water and where are the best things to see in the hole?

3. Anyone ever stayed at Crystal Seaview? How does one drive there and is it a doable walk to the Westin?

4. How do you actually get to Drunk Bay? Last time we went to Ram's Head but were so hot and tired when we got done that we didn't attempt to find Drunk. Looking at the map I assume one would just go left at the salt pond instead of going right around the salt pond to get to Ram's Head.

Thanks in advance:
LS

Answer to a couple of questions:

The car barges is located in Red Hook, which is on the east side of STT off of Rte 32/Red Hook Rd. There are a couple different ways to get there.

Yes, you go left around Salt Pond. It is actually a relatively short level walk.

Chocolate hole is my favorite snorkel Take the road past the pond bay site there is a smale beach at hte end of it I like to snorkel the left side out and around the point. Then if it isn't to rough at the mouth I like to cross it and snorkel the right side back the left is better but I like both.

Walk to Crystal Seaview

Post by StJohnRuth »

We own property (no house) on Roman Road, near Crystal Seaview. Yes, you can walk to Crystal Seaview from the Westin, but it is uphill. Walking downhill TO the Westin would be much easier! Note that there are no sidewalks.
I don't know how familiar with the neighborhood you are. When you go past the Westin, you go up a hill, past the dumpsters on your left. At the top of this hill, you would turn right onto Roman Road. The road is flat from here and Crystal Seaview is the third house on the left.
You can actually see most of the drive in this jeepcam from on-stjohn.com. At the point where on-stjohn turns off the Westin road onto Rock Ridge Road, you would be turning right onto Roman Road.

Let me know if I can help any further.

Hi
I am mostly a lurker myself but I have stayed at Crystal Seaview before and really loved it. It is up the hill on South Shore road from the Westin on Roman Road. A number of people in my group walked to the Westin several times. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes depending on your pace. The way back takes a little longer because you are walking up hill.
As for snorkling in Chocolate Hole, the first road after the Westin is Great Cruz Bay road. This will provide you access at the end to Chocolate hole. I have always found spots to park.

Thanks Ruth, I can see it on the satellite shot now. Crystal Seaview is much closer to the Westin than I thought. Looks steep, is there a back way to go without getting out on the road?

And thanks SouthShoreBoy, where do you park? then snorkel East I assume?

My memory failed me its not Great Cruz Bay Rd you want its Chocolate hole east and bear right at the first road this will take you down to a spot you can park and enter Chocolate Hole. I can't even blame that brain lapse on rum.
