1-2 mile swim

Post by kingConch »

Any recommendations for a 1-2 mile swim that would be safe from boats & currents? I lap swim but have never swam in the ocean for any reason besides good snorkeling & scenery (which I can't wait to do in STJ!)

I saw the Beach-to-Beach swim at the end of the month & wish we could be there for the set route, spotters & camaraderie. It looks like whoot. But we're going a little later then that. (6 weeks and counting!)

Any thoughts?

Ive seen people swimming "laps" at Maho. About 25 yards off shore, its a nice long lap. Not sure about currents

Start on the right side of Maho (as you are facing the water) swim parallel to the shore to the other end of the beach then follow the shore line around the point - great snorkel btw :) - and follow around to Cinnamon Bay it will be approx 1 mile but you will need to have someone pick you up at Cinnamon (no fun walking the road in a suit and no shoes - fins won't work :))

If you reverse your route you will have approx 2 miles but the swim from Cinnamon to Maho is against the current and will give you a good workout - just don't panic you will get there in the end :)

If you stay close to the shore not only will you get a great snorkel (I always swim with a mask and snorkel (no fins) as it makes swimming alot more interesting) but you will be out of the boating zone, you will see the markers for the no boat zone along the way.

Your other option is to just swim Maho - that is where most swimmers can be found - they swim laps close to the no boat markers - great swim - do 4 (I think) for a mile (ish)

Hope this helps
