St. John questions/advice

Post by sandollar »

Hello Everyone: Just signed on this board and am so impressed with the dedication, helpfulness and professionalism of all the members! It almost feels like an extended family with such wonderful support!

My husband and I are hoping to get some background info/comparison on visiting STJ Jan/Feb or April/May '09 and the pros and cons of the two timeframes from experienced travelers. We are in our 60's, enjoy beaches, snorkeling, daily walking, good food, visiting historical sites etc. We are from MA so a winter escape is one plus and looking for other input. Thanks!

Welcome, Diane. You've come to the right place :D . You'll find that the water temps in Jan and Feb are cooler so that's one difference. Also you are apt to find high surf which can affect the water clarity for snorkeling. And the rates are higher during high season and the island is a bit more crowded then. Typically the rates drop in mid-April so that's a plus and water temps are beginning to warm around that time. I've been in Feb, Mar, Apr, May and June. May is my personal favorite time to go. My hubby and I are also 60-ish and are looking forward to being on STJ for 2 weeks in May, following an 8 day say on Bonaire. We leave next Tuesday. You'll love St. John. Renting a villa and a Jeep is the way to go.

Hi there....Lots of info will follow I bet! Here is my take on the time you visit.Price is huge if you come in high season which is usually 12/15 to 4/15. If that is not a big deal then relaize that it is pretty busy around the holidays. Do you want to be there during spring break or Easter when it gets to be a problem for rental cars? We have been going to St John since 1991. Most visits have been after Thanksgiving before Christmas. Note that daylight is quick this time of the year but great prices and fewer folks and water temp still in the 83 to 86 range is nice. We are also in the late 50/early 60 range and enjoy all you like including scuba for me and the desire to rent a boat or dingy to explore...If you like please PM me and we can give more info or even call us which will answer your questions quicker. My day time phone is 540-349-9100. No problem calling me.. it is my company....God bless Bill

We have found that the information is nearly endless on this forum. We are heading to Boston for a convention next month and the group is planning a get together on May 17th. There is another posting with that discussion. If you are in the area and are interested, please join us.

We are not too far from Boston and I would love to go; however, we have a family birthday that day. Perhaps another time. Thanks for the offer.

All info has been helpful and will give more thought and see what DH has to say. He's up to a little more hiking than I am.
