This totally sucks. We love the Stone Terrace. This is the worst news we've heard in a long, long time about St. John.
To all who may read this, who know us, who work/worked at Stone Terrace: The Bonehenge legacy falls. Too sad. Seriously, this is horrible news.

Pickle, I'm with you. Stunned is the best way to put it. Even our kids are upset about this. Major sighs when I read this news to them tonight. We've taken them there on our family vacations as our one special dinner out during the trip ("okay ladies, pack one special outfit for our night out at the Stone Terrace!").
Pete and I have had so many wonderful experiences there over the years (we always spend two weeks WITHOUT kids on STJ each year). With friends (Ruth and Ron), and alone.
The routine will be all messed up now. We park the car at Conrads. We get a drink at the Stone Terrace and then...where for dinner? So, so many times, it ended up being a fantastic dinner at Stone Terrace at the bar. But, always, ALWAYS, we made a special reservation with Dave for the night before our last night on island...a table on the rail.
I am so sad. This place holds way too many memories for me. Wonderful memories.
Too many changes. Not good.

Gosh, I'll miss this place.
Once, many years ago, I had the rack of lamb and then arranged the "used" bones in a shape resembling Stone Henge...we called it "Bone Henge." From then on, we, as a couple, became known at the Stone Terrace as the Bone Henge couple. We also used to write our thanks to the chef in left over Josephine's greens.
We have met so many wonderful people who work/worked there.
Carla, a great waitress with a talent for drawing. She was the first to point out the tree frog who likes to hang out behind the light by the rail. She once drew us a great sketch of a squirrel with a nut...on a bev nap. It was kind of a joke we had about even a blind squirrel finding a nut. We still have the drawing.
Alan, the bartender...known to some as "car bomb." He and I made football bets every year. I lost them all. This year I am supposed to send him a box of cheese. I wonder where to send it.
Erin, another great bartender. When we walked in last time, she made us feel so welcome by saying, "it's good to see friends again."
Dave...my brother. We just hit it off with him from the get-go. We'd challenge each other with trivia questions and generally cut on each other...he's from NY, that's a form of flattery there. He has a great book of food trivia. Just ask him where the name for eggs Bennedict came from. I will miss him so much.
The bar at Stone Terrace was a place where we had some of our most wonderful times. This one hurts.
But, to those friends that we have met who work there, we wish you well and hope that as this door closes, another will open. Thanks for making us feel welcome in your company.

Wisconsin, smell the dairy air
Hey Marcia & Pete, Though I rarely spent time in Cruz Bay, I feel for you guys. I hate it when a well loved, good establishment closes. It is kind of like a death, if not of a actual person, then like a part of the spirit of what you love of the place.
Is it just me, or are there an awful lot of restaurant closings this year on STJ? It seems the island is busier then ever, with more tourist dollars then ever. So what's up with all of the closings? I know that the restaurant business always has a pretty high rate of failures in the first couple of years of being in business, but some of these places have been seemingly pretty successful for awhile.

That is too bad. I never cared for the Fish Trap (though I liked their market), but the Stone Terrace was great. I will say that when we ate there in October they had just reopened after a menu revamp and in my opinion the new menu was not nearly as interesting as the old one. But, they had great views, a wonderful wine list, and I will miss eating there.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
