Boat at Maho

Post by MLS »

The past two weeks there was a boat that looks like it was straight out of McHale's Navy parked our where the super yachts anchor out past the sailboats, catamarans, and smaller power boats. It looked military or commercial, yellow on top, black or dark blue bottom. Large dingy, spanish speakers, appeared Asian, Oceanic, Filipino?

Anybody know?

I saw a boat that fit that description off Anguilla 2 years ago. Captain said it belonged to someone who had made his fortune via Microsoft..... I forget the name of him/it, though. It did look like McHale's Navy !

On second thought, the one you are seeing might be that real military-ish boat that I have seen there before..

If it looked as if it was privately owned, you can probably figure it out if you poke around Yacht Spotter (just put those two together and add a .com). It's a pretty cool site, though usually sightings are indexed by Marina...

This boat would never make Yacht Spotter. Is there a Bucket Spotter? It is probably a gorgeous, valuable boat, but a yacht it ain't!

We'll be on island next week and we usually see a lot of boats in Maho/Francis Bays that have come over from PR for the Easter week festivities. I'll look and see if your guy is still there. But, in theory, you can only moor/anchor in the National Park waters for 30 days per year.

That boat is an old wooden fishing trawler from Nuuk Greenland. I saw it first at Norman Island just before Christmas and have spotted it all over the VI since.
It has been fixed up and is a live aboard.
I will be with RickG next week and will get a picture of it.

I have seen the same boat in the Harbor here and then a few weeks ago when we were on St John. It sure is bright :).
