Camera on St. John?
Camera on St. John?
It sounds like lots of you take along your nice camera's on your trip. Obviously at the villa, I'm not concerned, but what do you do out on the island? You know, its not a super expensive camera, less than $1,000, but I don't want it damaged by sand, or stolen from a soft top jeep, or off our towels on the beach. How does the camera thing work on island??? Do you not take the expensive one to the beach with you? It's just me and my husband going in early August. Thanks for the insight!
I don't think you have to worry too much about your camera getting stolen, although, with that said you still need to use common sense regarding valuables. Take your camera to the beach with you, just put it back in your camera bag when your not using it. If you decide to go snorkeling, lock it in the car out of sight. Many times, you'll find that there aren't many other people on the beach with you, so just keep your stuff in sight if you go swimming. Cover it with a towel or put it in a beach bag. Just don't advertise that you have a nice camera sitting there and you should be fine. I have a nice camera as well and a bunch of expensive lenses that I'm planning on taking with me every day. While I think crime on St. John is very rare, it can still happen anywhere at any time. As long as your not careless, your stuff will be OK.
For our upcoming trip to St. John, I bought a waterproof case/underwater housing for my Canon, so from this trip on I won't have to worry about the camera left on the beach and I am excited that I'll be taking underwater photos.
Before I got the case, I wasn't totally comfortable taking my camera to the beach. I've never had unfortunate incidents there but I know theft does happen (maybe not commonly) even on St. John. When I took my camera to the beach, I didn't take it out until I was done snorkeling and knew I wasn't going too far from my stuff. I might be a bit on the paranoid side, but that's okay with me. I still fully enjoyed the beaches.
