Waterfall on STJ

Post by sherban »

I thought I saw a picture of a waterfall on STJ, is there one? If so can you tell me where it is?

That might make a great destination for a day hike in June...

Thanks alot for any help!

Maryanne- Ok, I know where the petroglyphs are...we'll put that on the list.

SJ- If you know where another is located, let me know, thanks.

Trust me - you don't want to see the waterfall because if it is running you will have had rain, rain, rain and more rain :) and the walk to see it would be a miserable one :)

It only "runs" after torential downpours :)

In his book "St John: Off the Beaten Track" Gerald Singer gives a good bit of info about the falls at the Fish Bay and Battery guts.

Pia- Thanks...not sure if that is good news or bad, but thanks.

Lex- You just sold a book, seek your comission from the author :). I have FF&4WD but not the "Off the beaten track..." one...

We have--and use--both FF&4WD and OTB. Both are good. Either one would be fine. There is overlap, but each has stuff that the other doesn't--the info about the falls and guts being an example. I think OTB might be a bit better for hikes. The National Geo map is also really good to have. It may be the best made map ever. I don't know how old our copy is and it still shows no sign of wear.

This is why I asked the question- I found this photo on the internet from someone's trip to STJ...it reminded me of this cool waterfall hidden in the woods in Vriginia (Craig County)where my friend (wife now)impressed me with her cute polka dot bikini...ah memories...Image

I wonder if that photo was taken after the 2003 November rains. There were waterfalls where waterfalls shouldn't have been that year - on both St. Thomas and St. John.

Waterfalls

Post by sherban »

After reading "Off the beaten track" and snooping around a bit, it seems there are two distinct waterfalls (at least).

The waterfalls above the petroglyphs (~40 feet high)--

And a waterfall ~ .1 mile up Battery gut from the Battery/Fish Bay guts intersection (70 feet tall)---

There are also a few waterfall pics here- that are questionable labeled (Reef Bay), pretty sure they are the Petroglyphs fall...

If we end up hiking to either of these I'll try to get photos and locate these into my STJ pushpins/maps...

Sherban, I hope you are going for about 2 months with your to do list!!!

Fish Bay ghut is a cool hike. Douse yourself in bug spray. The Trail Bandit maps are pretty good for this one.

Cheers, RickG

Rick- I'm going to be there a week so I'm not going to get it all done...I like to have a list 3X as long as I'll ever get to so I have alot to choose from! The only "must do's" on my list for June so far are: snorkeling Waterlemon, Hiking up to to "ruins" above Leinster point, finding the plane at little cinnamon. Then, as you noticed, I have ALOT of "want to dos" on the list too...we'll see....

Wishwewerethere- Thanks for the notes on the reef bay hike...if I make it there I'll try to bring the camera (and protect it)...

Cheers-
