Anyone interested in a HEALTHY FOOD PORN thread????

Post by cypressgirl »

All those wonderful dishes you share look sooooo good, but I am trying to cook low fat, healthy carbs, all that boring stuff. Does anyone have an interest in sharing recipes that would fit that category? I realize it is not as much fun, but I need some help coming up with ideas. Also, if anyone is a trainer or has expertise in how to shed pounds successfully, I'd like to hear about it. There are so many differing opinions on supplementation, amount of water needed daily, cardio vs. strenght training, how much cardio per session, percentage of protien, healthy carbs, and fat per day, which protein shakes are the best, etc., etc., etc. I'm no chef, so I probably can't offer any pretty pictures, but I'm hoping some of you can.

You can Poo-Poo the idea. It won't hurt my feeling. I was wondering if there are others out there interested in the same thing. I'm trying to get on the cover of SI. Just Kidding!!!!!!

I think you'd be surprised in how many of the dishes that are posted fit your criteria. If you look back at my black bean chili that recipe came from a blog that is geared toward South beach diet, not that you have to be on it to enjoy the recipes.
And the jambalya could be made with brown rice if you wanted. I used Uncle Ben's which is supposedly better on carbs than other white rices.

made instead of a different thread we try to ID the healthier ones in the future. A recipe should give you a good idea.

I agree with marybeth. I don't post a ton of food porn but we are on a very strict healthy food plan and everything I make is very low in fat and extremely low on sodium because of Chip's high blood pressure.
I will try and post some more recipes from my healthy files!

Cypressgirl -

I have the same problems as you - it is hard to cook good, healthy foods and come up with meal ideas.

I joined Weight Watchers last April and am down almost 30lbs and at my goal weight. I know different things work for different people, but I highly recommend their program.

I also began working out regularly although I hate it(!) and am going to do a sprint triathlon in June. I am not going to do it fast, but I plan to finish!

I work out with a trainer twice a week and we do 40 second circuits on about 10 or so different things - from weights to lunges to jumping rope. It has done wonders. In addition, I am doing cardio about 2-3 times a week.

It ain't easy and I am a work in progress!!!

Hey Cyp, you're not alone. Still, trying to figure out good carbs from bad carbs and good fats from bad fats, is just another one of those things I find challenging. That and the fact that I'm not much of a cook and trying to come up with new ideas, makes Nutrisystem my food of choice these days. I suppose when that runs out I can go to X's house for dinner. I mean, if she has to make dinner for Chip anyway and since she's not that far away, what's one more. And on a side note, the photoshoot for that cover shot was exhausting and it took me all day. Ali~

You guys are so cute!!

It seems like instead of a seperate thread, we could incorporate some healthy meals in between the ones I'd really like to make and eat. :(

I guess I should go back and sift through all the yummy ones (torture) and find the ones that will suit my situation.

I'm proud of all of you that have done so well. I'm down 5.5 lbs. Not a big deal, but I'm going in the right direction, like a snail. :?

I applaud you all for all of your efforts.

I am interested and can help although I hesitate to help because no one usually wants to know the truth about what to do. Everyone wants miracle schemes and gravitates to quack diets.
Since I am a Registered Dietitian, this is part of what I do all day and I come to the forum to escape it.
For a price  I can maybe help.
It's simple, eat less and exercise more!
Hey, you can tell I don't always practice what I preach. I struggle along with the rest of you.

Bring on the healthy recipes.

Tonight for dinner we had linguine with clam sauce and spinach salad

We used whole wheat pasta and portioned it out. Sauteed onions and garlic with a small amount of olive oil, add a can of clams with the juice and deglaze with white wine add a pinch of pepper and parsley.

The salad was just fresh spinach with a hot honey mustard dressing. It was just 3 tbls of cider vinegar, 1 tbls olive oil, 1 tbls honey, 1 tbls dijon and some pepper. Heat to boiling and pour over spinach.

It was very easy and super yummy and not pretty darn healthy.

OK Sea-nile, since we all struggle, maybe we can help each other come up with meals our families will enjoy and help us shed some fat and keep our kids from getting fat. I know it's not fun, but if it keeps me going to STJ longer, it's worth it.

there is one in my supermarket that I always buy but I'm not sure of the name - it might be Gemalli or something like that. I buy the hot for more flavor.

But actually I forgot that is not what I cooked tonight. I made these tonight - they are really good and the "burgers" are good for the grill http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail

Hey Cypress,
I am so glad you brought this up. I have been wanting to start a similar thread about weight loss/exercise but I thought I would get booed for not being fun

I'm trying to drop 20-25lbs. Last night I started measuring out portions and adding calories and I was amazed at what I was really eating as a portion and how unbalanced my diet is.
I am a sugar freak and I have to learn to manage that.
I switched from coke to club soda to start and now plan lots of small meals/snacks per day to keep my sugar levels even.
I am also doing cardio-stepper, treadmill, anything I can. I think the key to losing is to rotate exercises, lots of cardio, use light weights to tone.
I think it would be motivating if those of us who are trying to lose can post progress. I know it would help me.
When will I see St John again?

I think there is a good mix of some healthy meals on the Food Porn thread; just goes to show that even healthy can look yummy.

Cyp - check out the Quinoa Stuffed Peppers that I posted the other day. They're healthy and easy. Mary Beth's posted some great fish dishes and the crock pot fajitas are good, as well. You probably want to skip the Buffalo Chicken dip. Also check out the Cooking Blog thread. I've found some good recipes on those blogs. Check out the Soup thread, too. Losing the weight at a snail's pace is the best way to go! Keep it up - I mean down - I mean off - well, you know what I mean
