Travel to the BIG sports "events"

Post by jmq »

Just watched the end of an epic 4 hr tennis match that ended at 2am local time at the Australian Open. Coming back from breaks they showed some Aussies and the "girls in their summer clothes" having a fine old time in a park outside the stadium where they had big screens set up, etc.

How cool would that be to travel to a big sports event like that? Had the same thoughts when they showed the segments they did at the beer halls during the last World Cup in Germany and the late nights at Greek cafes during the summer Olympics.

Always wished I could experience the mega sports events. The sports fan in me would enjoy the games of course and the traveler in me would enjoy all else that goes with it.

Can any of you share some personal experiences you might have had with this kind of stuff? Even here in the USA, folks who have been to the Kentucky Derby, the Indy 500 or even Michigan/Ohio State say that these sports "events" are something to behold in person.

well it didn't really include travel but I was there when both Tom Seaver and Roger Clemens won their 300th. It was also 4000 K's for Clemens that night. Which all is now shrouded in mystery but I digress.

The Seaver day was NUTS over there. Cops were parking people on the Major Deegan and taking their money like they were parking lot attendants :roll:

I know those aren't the BIG events but its as close as I will likely get :)

That post 9/11 Piazza home run is easily one of the Top 10 NYC sports moments of all time. Another recent great non-game goose bump moment on TV was Paul Simon standing in center field before a Yankee game singing Mrs Robinson after Joe D. passed.

The best I got is local only too and from the 70s (how old am I getting???) and kinda even before sports stuff started morphing into "events".
> 1973 NBA Playoffs, last time Knicks won a championship (epic battles with the Bullets & Celtics) with electric atmosphere at the Garden;
> 1976 Rutgers men BBall Final Four in Philly;
> and the Mets/Reds playoff game at Shea when Bud Harrelson and Pete Rose started a huge brawl.

I am a closet Formula 1 junkie and have been to 3 or 4 races since it came back to the US. I am NOT any other kind of racing fan (no nascar, cart, or the like for me) just F1.

I LOVE the sound of those cars. As a matter of fact, both kids went to a race in utero. I thought the fumes were making me sick ... not so much!

97 NFC championship - whats that like in a town like Green Bay leading up to and after a win?

Does golf count? Just kidding. Huge pressure and drama at some of those events. Considering the demographics though cant image the crowd getting too crazy. What world championship would that be in 2011?

In 2003, as his very first Father's Day present, I bought my husband and his best friend (both die-hard Packers Fan's) tickets to a Packers game at Lambeau Field. Did the airline tickets, hotel reservation, the whole works.

They set off on there journey on a Friday morning and returned from the game on Monday. They were in heaven. It was not a Championship game or anything major (they played Kansas city), but just to be there was a life time dream. They sat 5 rows up on the 50 yard line. They toured the stadium and tailgated in the parking lot. They drank with the local and made friends.

To this day, both those boys simply "beam" with joy when they talk about their trip. Which I should mention they do quite often! Know matter what that gift cost, it was priceless!

I have been to a lot of college bowl games - the two I have fondest memories of were the Sugar Bowl following the '96 season and the BCS Championship game in Glendale, AR a year ago.

My brother and I went to France for twoo weeks in '98 during the World Cup. We had tickets to the three matches that the USA played in, in Paris, Lyon, and Nantes. It was a disappointing tournament for the USA, but the experience was incredible!

There was one of those huge outdoor screens set up in a public park in Nantes, and we got to see the France-Denmark quarterfinal (or was it round of 16?) game there. When France hit the winning goal in extra time the place went nuts!

Very cool!

Been to lots of bowl games. Orange, Rose and even travelling to away games are lots of fun even though they aren't the big event. They become big parties and you can't beat tailgating at the bowl games at 6.00 in the morning with mimosas and bloody mary's close at hand.

The Olympic games in 1984/Los Angeles was great. I was fortunate to have tickets to all of the track events and the whole atmosphere was great. Getting there early and hanging with folks from all over. That was the biggest 'world' event and still have 'stuff' from the event.

We went to all of the soccer games at the Rose Bowl during the '84 Olympics. It was my first trip to California, and the traffic, especially the gridlock on I-5 just amazed me.

Then to hear all of the locals remark at how uncrowded the highways were due to people getting out of town during the event just blew my mind.

Went to the Altanta Oylmpics down and back from NYC in one day! A 5:00Am flight from Newark and a midnight return. A bit crazy but glad I did it.

Coming from a guy who used to travel in those days from home to office, that was the best two weeks of travel on the freeways. If you were amazed then, like the guys says, come on down.

Actually the reason for less folks on the street had more to do with the way companies set up deliveries in the evening times and less to do with people leaving town.
