Day 9: Santa Claus is coming to town

Post by mbw1024 »

12/1/07 St. John is getting in the holiday spirit with Steve Simon's free jazz concert in the park. More on that later.

We were sipping coffee and discussing the day when Charlie noticed this. He didn't say anything he just pointed.

Today we were planning to finish the north shore drive for pictures and stops at any beaches we wanted to go to. First stop Gibney:

As we were leaving Gibney, PatR and her husband were arriving. They have sent their friends on the walk of woe but they had another week to go. Lucky ducks!
We continued down the north shore

Somehow I have no pictures from Maho on this trip but we were there. Maybe it was this day.

Then we went for smoothies:

We had talked to Slimman earlier in the week about getting a taxi out to our villa and he told us he knew someone so come see him when we were ready. So we headed back to town and Charlie went to see Slimman while I took what I thought was my last stroll around Mongoose. Finally made it in to the friends of the Parks store and made a few purchases. Charlie met me back there and it was all set - Westie the cab driver was coming to pick us up at 6:45 for our last night on the town.
Then we headed to the Tap Room. We chatted with Kevin a good bit both times we were in there. Nice guy. Good beer.

Back to the villa for lunch. Cafe Roma leftovers. We were packing up a bit this afternoon in between jumps in the pool. I turned on my cell phone for the first time all week as I was expecting news from home - it came

Friends of ours had just gotten engaged atop Cape May lighthouse!

Doing a little reading! :)

Just to spice things up on our last day there was a power outage just as we were getting ready to have our Champagne. Not at big deal at first but after the first hour it was like hmmmmmmm... now what!?
At this point we didn't know if Westie was going to come or not - we heard from our property manager that the whole island was out. Eventually we gave Ruth and jingle and she said town had power, come on down!
The power came back at our place around 6:40. Minutes before Westie called to say he was waiting for us. We still didn't have water back so it was either send Westie away or pull on some clothes and say heck with it we are going. So we went :)

Westie left us off in town. We stopped by Joe's Rum hut for some drinks and then went over to the jazz concert.

He would have shaved if we had water!

Around 9 we headed over to Rhumblines for our last dinner. It was probably just me but this place didn't thrill me. It was ok but not great. But I would give it another try since I think a good part of my dissatisfaction was because I was hot, tired and had just had my fill from the entire week.
We met up with Westie in town at our pre set time and off we went back to our villa. One stop to drop off a woman that worked at Caneel who we were talking with on the ride, a quick stop at Pine Peace so Westie could run in and get an ice cream bar - he offered to buy us one too but we passed :)
Then we headed back out South Shore. I noticed there was a car in front of us driving slow. I mean REALLY slow! Westie noticed too as he was trying to pass them, flashing his high beams, tail gating, you name it! I felt bad for the people in the car but I mean come on, eventually just let the guy pass you. This goes on all the way to Gifft Hill Rd. Westie was riding the bumper, moving over to the other lane, honking.
Finally at GH Rd. the white car comes to a complete stop. Westie starts to go around when a man gets out of the car and starts approaching the taxi and I think oh here we go, ROAD RAGE! So here comes this guy, perhaps from Texas but I'm not sure and he says to Westie "can you help me, we are lost. we are looking for a Villa Calarada (Colorado) and all we know is it overlooks a little bay with boats." !!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????? overlooks a little bay with boats - YES I KNOW THE PLACE!!!!!!!!! Is this guy for real? All he knew was the villa name. No road, no neighborhood, oh and he also knew the owners name. That was it. And he said they had been there during day but now at night they couldn't find their way!
Westie had no clue and at this point there was another taxi behind us so Westie suggested he ask the next guy and we moved on! That guy could still be looking for all I know!

Certainly a memorable evening for the final night of our vacation! Funny!

I agree with you about Rhumblines. I really liked the atmosphere and the food was good, but just good. Not amazing. I think Zozos ruined me!

Great job Mary Beth! I've really enjoyed your trip report and fondly remember when you were there last year with the champagne in the water. Congratulations to your friend Mike and his new fiance! I'm sure he'll love that cell phone picture!
