Trip Report - Just the facts

Post by jdw »

I wish I could write a detailed trip report like liamsaunt but I am not that talented!!! I will just let you know the basic details - short and sweet!!

There were six of us (three couples) and we were in St. John from November 3 - 10. We flew SpiritAir and I was a little nervous because typically I fly Delta to most everywhere I travel. Because of the difference in fares (Delta was approximately $400 more per ticket), we decided to try Spirit. I have no complaints at all. It did take longer because we had to connect in Ft. Lauderdale but all of our flights - going and coming - were on time, staff was great, luggage arrived, etc. I would definitely fly with them again.

We used Christopher's taxi service and then Dohms water taxi to get us to St. John - perfect way to go!!! So easy and quick.

We rented two jeeps from Courtesy - no problems there.

Our villa was Argonauta (thanks liamsaunt for the recommendation and for answering all of my questions!) and we loved it. The view is the best part - water all around!! The villa is a little older and some of the furnishings should be updated but we were very happy there.

Our first day was long - up at 3:45, first flight at 8:00. We finally made it to St. John around 4:00. Lisa met us at the ferry dock and took us to the villa. Mixology had already been there and delivered our goodies - that was great!!! Definitely recommend using Mixology. We went to town and had an early dinner at the Beach Bar - the service was awful, our food came out two meals at a time, with about 10 minutes between each delivery - we were tired, cranky and hungry - this was our worst meal of the trip. We were all in bed by 9:30.

Sunday was great - we woke up early and headed to Miss Lucy's for brunch. We were able to get a table for six and the whole experience was wonderful - sitting by the water, jazz music, wonderful food, mimosas - probably my favorite meal. We went to Starfish on the way back to the villa and stocked up on groceries. We changed clothes and spent the afternoon at Trunk Bay. On the way home we stopped at St. John Spice and said hello to Ruth. We also picked up several spices and used one of them on the steaks for dinner.

The rest of the week we pretty much kept the same schedule (except for Monday night - the three girls had cocktails with SOTB at their villa - that was fun - it felt like we were meeting celebrities!!!):

Up early for breakfast on the deck
Packed the cooler
Stopped at Baked in the Sun or Deli Grotto (we switched everyday) for sandwiches
Spent the day at a different beach
Headed home around 3:30
Hot tub having cocktails watching the sunset
Dinner

Beaches we visited:

Trunk
Cinnamon
Francis
Hawksnest (twice)
Salomon

My personal favorite was Salomon (except for the hike). We had the entire beach to ourselves for most of the day. We saw two dolphins - one was a baby - that was way cool!! A close second is Hawksnest - so perfect. I did think about waterguy and it made me thankful that I still have my spouse and was able to enjoy the day with him. Waterguy - I can definitely understand why your wife picked Hawksnest for her service.

Restaurants we visited:

Miss Lucy's
Morgan's Mango
Banana Deck
Skinny Legs
Uncle Joes
Lime Inn
Chilly Billy's

It was a great week (two of the guys celebrated their 50th birthday) and we were sad to have to come home. Of course, I have already started thinking about when we can return.

Thanks for all the tips that I received from this forum - could not have planned this trip without you!!!

Sounds a lot like our trip too, except we left the beach at 3:30 to go to Happy Hour before we went home for our poolside, sunset drinks!

Thank goodness for cheap rum.

Great trip report.

Sounds like our trips, as well - except for the "up early" part :)

Nice little report, thank you! Sounds like a wonderful week. I think the Beach Bar service definately depends on who's working. We had one Fantastic drinks/dinner experience and one not so much. I did like Boo's painkillers the best!

What a great trip (and report)!

One of the neat things about this forum is seeing how everyone "does" STJ just a little bit differently from everyone else, tweaking the trip to meet their desires, budget, personal situations, etc.

Thanks for the report!

I am glad you had a nice time! How did you like the driveway at Argonauta? :P
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Wow ~ Celebrities? How about a bunch of drunken fools  I hope we didn't scare you all away that night. The next morning we were trying to remember everything that happened but were afraid too  It was really nice to meet you and your girl friends!

XOXO

Ditto, ditto for our trips. Except we tend to pack our own sandwiches (usually PP&J).

Glad to hear that Spirit was okay, have wondered about it from time to time. We were lucky and got Delta out of National (Reagan)for $196.00 each (of course with fees it was 250).

Isn't sitting in your OWN hot tub, pool, or on deck at Happy Hour one of the best things about STJ vacations??? We tend to over compensate and hardly have an appetite for dinner!!! :P

We're staying near your villa, at Splendore, hope the location is as nice! Sunsets are SO SWEET!!!

flight

just curious, did you fly out of Detroit, MI? Our flight times in April are almost the same, and I too am nervous about Spirit. I have flown them in the past, but not to STT. But, oh man the price was good...
