Favorite Vacation Foods

Post by naturegirl »

Ok, we have the "Food Porn" site and the restaurant reviews, how about "Favorite Vacation Foods". We can also add "favorite dishes" from St John restaurants.

We like to bring great cheeses, whole grain crackers/breads and some good olives. Add some wonderful appropriately chilled wines. Oh and blue corn tortilla chips with guacomole, pico de gallo, and sour cream.

Bacon, dry cured bacon. It doesn't require refrigeration. Of all the things we bring down, this is the most popular.

Fish! Especially mahi mahi. I can't find any good mahi mahi up here, so I order it as much as possible on St. John. Also, I love the local tuna.

As far as restaurant dishes, the favorite thing I have ever eaten by far at a St. John restaurant was the white chocolate-tarragon souffle with chocolate-dipped almond brickle at Tage. I don't usually like desserts but this dish was amazing. I've tried making it at home but have not been able to get enough tarragon flavor into the souffle.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

liamsaunt-have you tried to infuse the tarragon in oil first and then use in for the dessert.

Rick-i got the bacon all packed. Anywhere on the island you can find a nice tomato? A BLT is sounding mighty tasty right now. Maybe a Grilled cheese, tomato and bacon. Mmmmmmmmmm

Rick,
Do you order it ahead of time and pack it for the flight?

My favorite food while I was down there were the tuna bites at The Beach Bar. I love fresh seafood, so I ate a lot of it while I was there.

I'm not sure if you can beat cheeseburgers and painkillers, though.

We keep the Edwards Bacon in the house. I usually buy 10 pounds when we get low. I usually just bring the bacon in my knapsack. The manufacturer says its good for 14 days unrefrigerated.

Lulu76m,

I second the Tuna Bites from the Beach Bar! I love those things. That was the first thing I wanted when we arrived and they tasted the same as I remembered. I ate them several times on our last trip. Yum!
