Question about Delta service to STX

We booked non-stop Atlanta to STX on Delta (for 12-22 to 1-5) last June. Recently we were told (by someone else traveling to STX, not by Delta) that Delta was cancelling all flights to STX after December 15. Sure enough, we called and they have cancelled all flights to STX - I think they plan to start up again sometime in mid-January. We are now re-booked through San Juan with last leg of trip on Cape Air. That's ok, even though we paid extra for the non-stop for all the reasons we love non-stop (no risk of missing connecting flight, less risk of lost luggage, etc.). At least we will be spending two weeks on island.

MY QUESTION - Does anyone know why Delta has cancelled flights to STX?

Airlines do it when they don't have enough demand. USAirways has done it to be 4 times now - it's the pits.
