Help us pick a week to go to STJ

Post by jimg20 »

We are planning our fourth trip to STJ in April or May :D , and we need some help picking a week. If we could schedule a week when something is going on down there (as if there isn't enough to see and do already  ), we would like to try that. Isn't the carnaval going on around that time? If you have a suggestion, we'd like to hear about it.

I'm with jmq, half price on villas is plenty to celebrate about! You could go for a full moon week.

We always go a week or two before the rates go up! We'll be there April 19th-26th, 2008. If you end up going the same time let us know, I feel a Beach Bar party starting!!!

I agree, we like to go right before or after high season rates.
Going "home" again October 26th!

Hi Jim, Isn't April Spring Break month? I know you are prob using FF miles, but airline travel can be hectic during SB. Just my 2 cents! And I wanted to say HI!

In 2006, we went to STJ the last 2 weeks of May. Had wonderful sunny weather, Caribbean water was calm and warm. Pool was warm - almost too warm because it got sun most of day. A few rain showers at night.

This year, we went April 22 - May 4. Had lots of rain, and some days it poured buckets. Especially that first week - had rain most of day or a good chunk of day all but one day. :( It was the worst weather we have ever had in 22 years of traveling to the Caribbean. Pool at Bayview villa was too cold to use.

BUT, with that said, the weather charts we had looked at online show April is normally one of the driest months, so I think we may have hit an unusually rainy time. I think there had been a drought in the preceding months. So its hard to predict which is the best time - either month is fine, but its nice to go after the rates go down in April to have more money for other stuff.

Quite a few villas don't go off season until May 1.

Been there twice in May loved it, going again this May. Take advantage of low season rates. Also everythings still open but not too crowded.

I've been twice in May. In '05 the weather was postcard perfect, this year we had rain and cloudy skies. Still beautiful, but very different from the same week in '05. However I still think May is an awesome month to visit da ilons.

This has been a great help. As for the off-season pricing, that was our objective. Perhaps we were shooting for a date a bit too early in the year. And the weather --- We agree. We were on STT this year 5/16-22. The weather was perfect.

Someone posted a web site to calculate the tides and moon phases. I thought I bookmarked the site, but I can't find it. I used the search function but came up empty. Can someone remind me where to find it?

The carnaval that we encountered was on STT and I'll bet it was in the second half of April.

Hi Ksee, and thanks for that reminder. May would help avoid that issue.

Due to other events that we don't control, we are now looking at the week with Memorial Day. Will housing be scarce?

We have normally traveled during the week to get award seats. Is Saturday travel as much of a problem as some peole seem to indicate?

Thanks everyone :)
