Question for you camera people and Olympus owners

Post by Bug »

I just looked at the Olympus 770SW and noticed that they have 3 cameras available in the shockproof/weatherproof line including a brand new one (the 790SW).

After comparing the prices is seems like the older versions (720 and 770) are more expensive than the newer version. The only real difference I can see between them is the water depth. Can someone else see a major difference and tell me why one is better than the other.

It seems to me that you usually want the new version because of upgrades they did but why would the newer version be cheaper then? I'm so confused.....

I agree ya sure get alot of great info here.I'm also in the market for a new underwater camera. Bet the 770 falls way down after the new release as everyone will be trying to get rid of old stock. The price
has fallen probably because they were making huge profits off the cameras and could still lower the price and still make a good profit. Thats the way it is with electronics ya keep getting more for less. Paying some poor third world country worker 10 cents an hour. Sorry couldn't help myself but I'm losing my job because of this even though we made 22 million last year and are on track to do the same this year. CORPORATE GREED!!!!!! Sorry had to vent life is good it's just a little bump in road.

I have the Olympus Stylus 710 All-weather, 7.1 MP, 5X zoom - great little camera except I cannot see that LCD in the sunlight or the tropical shade Added a pop-up shade but still can't see, need a viewfinder option. Was looking at Canons but just bought a Fujifilm S700 with a 10X zoom, 7.1 MP and IS (which takes it to a 12X optical zoom somehow) - has an LCD and a viewfinder - bigger camera but great pix, especially at the price. Thought I was going to hold out until Xmas sales for a 10 MP and 12X optical zoom but couldn't beat this price and the reviews were so very good. Won't give up the Olympus, though, as it is so small and great for quick pix.

I love Steve's reviews - so in-depth - even has sample pix for each camera under different conditions:

Good luck finding your camera!

The 790 is limited to 10 ft depth vs the 33 for the 770. Makes all the difference to me. Especially since the camera is a sinker, not a floater.

As a very amatuer picture taker...not even photographer...(and newly partial to Canons)...I found this thread to be very interesting & informative...take a look see...

http://www.vinow.com/wwwtalk/read.php?4,80260

I just purchased the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS zoom lens 4xIS 8.0mp 5.8-23.2mm 1:2.8-5.5 after losing my Canon PS SD450 zoom lens 3x 5.0mp 5.8-17.4mm 1:2.8-4.9. Here are some underwater shots from the SD450 using the Canon AW DC50 underwater housing...rated to 10'. I tested that limit...easily to 12' with no problem. I use Kodak Easyshare software for cropping & editing. I was amazed at how little I needed to enhance/correct most shots. I'm no pro...but having great sunlight is really the key to good underwater shots.

Coincidentally...I just found my SD450...of course. Now I am debating buying the WP-DC15 case for the new SD850 to compare the two...or keeping to the SD450 for my underwater shots. Something tells me I'll be buying the WP-DC15...hehehe. (I can't wait! March 2008 soon come!)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... SD850.html

As a side note...I debated buying the Olympus 770 vs. the new Canon SD850. Couldn't pull the trigger as a friend who owns the Olympus 770 is less than thrilled with the "dry" shots from the Olympus...for what it's worth. She also mentioned having trouble viewing the LCD display in sunlight or even underwater...at times.

Good luck with whatever you decide! :D

Just want to tell that hubby bought a Olympus 770 SW
in STT. The price was 350 dollars including a memory card 1 MB. We like the camera, it's so easy to bring with you. But I have to say that our underwater pictures isn't so nice as I have seen in some trip reports, too example the latest from Cat. Don't know if we are doing something wrong or if it's the camera, which is not good enough.

Hi linne
You have to use some type of photo soft ware to clean up the under water photos because the water filters all of the red tones out. I use photo shop

There are only three differences thta I can see between the 720SW and the 790SW.

1. Video on the 790SW is at a full 30 frames per second (FPS) vs. 15 FPS on the older 720SW. Means more fluid natural looking movies on the 790SW.

2. The 790SW features the new TruePic III Image Processor vs. the slower TruePic TURBO Image Processor of the 720SW. This means slightly faster time between shots. You know when you take a picture and sit there waiting for the light to quit flashing so you can take another.

3. The newer 790SW supports up to 2GB xD Memory cards instead of the 1GB supported by the 720SW. Means you can store twice as many pictures and video as the 720SW.

If there are any other differences, I sure can't find them.

Waterguy!

I know that you can edit your pics, and I have done it in the program from Olympus, which hb
installed after we came home. Furthermore Promoguy has been so kind to edit some of our underwater pictures for me. But still, none of them (you can see a few in my trip report, part 5) are so clear as the pics, I see from others. Especially the latest from Cat’s trip report. So I’m curious to know if some Olympus 770 owners can tell me, if they are satisfied with the quality of the underwater pics.

What a difference between the two pictures! Perhaps I should try another editing program or
practice more. Cannot believe that you are able to change so much. But the camera should be OK, I can see. Your “before” pic is similar ours.

(bugblu98, hope that I’m not disturbing your topic!)

I'm with you. I love the underwater shots I get with my SD410 with the underwater housing from Canon. All I need to do is a color correction to get the photos right.

I'm off to pickup a Canon SD 850 IS for land shooting. I'd rather just leave the SD410 in the housing when its not charging. But, I get about 120 photos out of one battery charge with the SD410.

I've been waiting for the right time to by another camera. I'm a technology late adopter, I like the market to decide what works well. David Pogue's nytimes.com review convinced me that the SD850 was the one for me. That, and all of those blurry pictures I take without image stabilization.

At first, I was surprised at the frequency of comments I see about blurry pictures and the resulting popularity of image stabilization.

It seems like the full auto setting on my Canons always choose a really high shutter setting during most daylight situations at the expense of the aperature setting, sometimes forcing me to switch over to aperature priority in strong daylight to get more depth of field.

But then I thought about it more. I use the viewfinder most of the time (old 35mm habits die hard). With the camera pressed up against your eye, elbows in against the body, and using the Powershot models that have a built in grip (good ergonomic design), camera shake is never a problem, even zoomed out pretty far.

Whereas seeing lotsa folks holding their cameras at arms length using the LCD screen must make it more prone to camera shake, especially with those small slim models.

Another reason to go to the store and handle these cameras before you buy there or on line.

Hmmm, and I thought it was the rum making things blurry!
