Lobster Lovers R Us
Hello everyone!
Ok, here is my first official question on the forum. Suggestions for a good lobster dinner while on St. John. Some establishments will be closed during our stay during these dates 9/23-10/5.
Suggestions and comments would be much appreciated. Thanks you.
Good evening!

Not sure where you can go for a Lobster dinner – maybe Morgan’s Mango. But an alternative is to go to the Food Center just outside of Red Hook and pick out your bug (lobster) out of the live tank and bring him back to the villa for a feast.
This past May, I was planning to take a cooler over to the Food Center and load it up with bugs and bring them back to the villa on STJ. Unfortunately, we had to change our plans for the May trip, but you can bet the next time we’re down there – look out bugs, here I come.

Yep – depending which way you come into Red Hook. If you come into Red Hook where the ferry is – it about another mile or two up the road. If you come into Red Hook the other way, you’ll pass right by the Food Center.
They have a live tank with Caribbean Lobsters in it. The last time I got one, I got a nice 3 pounder.
I don’t see why a taxi wouldn’t take you. You’ll be in & out in a flash. I really like shopping at the Food Center. We usually hit it before catching the car barge to STJ.

A Caribbean lobster has all of the meat in its tail, as opposed to the Atlantic lobster, which is a mix of tail, claw, and body meat. The texture of the Caribbean lobster is firmer than the Atlantic. The Caribbean lobster is often served removed from the shell, sliced into medallions and sauteed. I don't eat lobster at all (bad experience at age 7 involving three whole lobtsers and four bowls of steamers) but John the lobster lover feels that the Atlantic lobster is preferable to the Caribbean lobster in general for sweetness and texture. That said, he had an enjoyable Caribbean lobster in two places in the USVI--Off the Hook on St. Thomas, where it was served whole with butter for dipping, and Zozo's, where it was sliced and sauteed with a sauce I don't remember.jdw wrote:How does a Caribbean lobster differ from a regular lobster? Are they available at any restaurants in St. John?
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
I am quite excited by this new information. We really enjoy Caribbean lobsters grilled and always seem to miss out when we try to get them at a restaurant. One year the ground seas kept the fishermen in, next year Morgans and Lime Inn sold out, etc.
I am going to plan on swinging by on our way to Red Hook. It will be a great way to start the week as we will all be getting up at 3:30 am that morning and will likely not feel like going back into town for dinner.

My favorite is Morgans Mango - I think it has something to do with the sides that come with it, followed closely by Lime Inn.
Lime Inn always has them available, and I have had some fabulous ones there but also a few that were tough
Morgans Mango usually does have them but I have been for "Lobster Tuesday" (you get a free glass of wine with a lobster meal) and they were out and they seemed to be out for a few weeks - so I would call to confirm they have them on the night you are wanting lobster if your choice is MM.
I ate lobster at ZoZo's and to me it was OK, no better than MM or LI so for the price I would have eaten my lobster at one of the other two restaurants and had something different at ZoZo's

We had the Lobster at ZoZos, and thought is was excellent. It was not the traditional "drowned in butter" version, but served with fresh herbs & veggies....really light and good.
We also had the grilled lobster at Caneel buffet. Also very good, especially when it's "all you can eat"!!
The best lobster in the world comes from New England, bar none!! By far more tender, and definitely sweeter taste. And of course I do love the claw, which the caribbean lobster don't have.
Okay....now I'm hungry!!
