OT: Hurricane Free Tropical Vacations, Last Minute!

Post by LysaC »

Hello everyone! I need some help!!

Background: I have a friend (don't we all, heehee) who has a new beau. He just found out that he is being shipped out to Iraq for 6 months at Camp Bucca starting in early October. This is a fresh new exciting relationship and so they want to spend some time-in-the-sun with rum-in-hand together before he leaves.

Can we say last minute tropical travel during hurrican season? YIKES!!

Can anyone reccommend a place to go in the next week or two for a week of two that is sunny and warm and hurricane free?

Please keep in mind that this nice new couple is not made-of-money. Regardless, all suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks guys!

It's hard to totally predict where a hurricane is going to develop, but if there is no tropical storm brewing close by and they are ready to book then they should just pick an island.

That being said, Aruba is supposed to be out of the hurricane belt and although it's not my favorite, it is pretty. Two years ago when our honeymoon was wiped out because a hurricane hit the mexican riviera the exact day of our wedding, our
travel agent handled everything while we celebrated our big day. We were fully refunded thanks to our trip insurance and then she booked us into Cabo San Lucas for the week. It was one of the few tropical places that wasn't experiencing tropical storms, tons of rain or hurricanes that October. I NEVER would have chosen Cabo for our honeymoon because I wanted the caribbean, but I'm so glad we went. It was gorgeous and we even had some really awesome snorkeling. Best of all, we saved about 1500.00 because of the change of location. It's an idea!

how about jumping on a last minute cruise? some times there are good deals out there last minute and many of the lines offer military discounts. if there's a storm threatening they try to choose a different route.
best of luck to your friends!

Well, since the hurricanes seem to be kicking up pretty good - even in Cabo - how about sunny California? There are so many awesome places here! The San Diego area is really quite tropical (without the humidity) this time of year! It's beautiful now that the heat wave has broken!

You guys are awesome!

CaliGirl: I was thinking Cali too so I'll make sure to reccomend it. We are on the East Coast so it'll be a bit of a flight but if they are going for a week it'll be worth it.

mbw1024: Thanks for the cruise idea but my friend isn't really a cruise-r.

Nic in KC: I alredsy sent the Aruba suggestion as well as a few other "very south" islands.

I'm actually hoping to talk them in to a non-caribbean vacation so they don't have to worry. I just want them to have a good timne together.

Not only is this a pre-ship-out-to-Iraq vacation but it's their first vaca together.

Since you are in Boston, would Bermuda be something to consider? It's only a 2 hour flight (if that), and the beaches are so nice and warm at this time of year. They might be able to get a package deal for something reasonable.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I don't know if this works, my neighbor told me about this website and has friends that used it before. It's only for the military and gov't employees, but if you know someone that is gov't they can purchase this for you. A while back I did see a timeshare available through this program that was on St. John.

Good luck!
