The Racine Zoo will be hosting the second annual Zoo-B-Que on Friday, September 21st and Saturday, September 22nd. The Get Your Wild game On BBQ team will be participating (that's my buddies and me if you haven't figured that out
). The info on the event is here...
http://www.racinezoo.org/news.html
If anyone wants to stop by and say hello, I'll be glad to meet you! The Zoo is charging admission for both days. Friday night there are some other activities going on (CEO Grilling contest, People's Choice competition) so the admission includes those events and a couple of drink coupons (I think general admission is $10 and if you want to sample the People's Choice food and vote that admission is $20). Saturday admission is $5.00. If you want to talk to the BBQ competition teams then Friday night is the best time to be there. We are usually set up by mid afternoon on Friday and then relax and visit for Friday evening. We normally start cooking at around midnight. If you want to see the teams in action, then Saturday morning is a good time, but most teams don't spend much time visiting since we are in full court press for the turn-ins which start at noon and run until 1:30. If you want to see the awards ceremony that is usually at 3 or 4 on Saturday afternoon.
I won't know where we will be until we get there on that Friday so if anyone is going to visit PM me and I'll give you my cell number.
The next competition after Racine will be the Barn burner BBQ at Lamb's Farm in Libertyville, IL on October 19th and 20th. Lamb's Farm should have some activities going o n around the competition, too. last year it was a fun event.

I thought it was a bit odd, tooPete (Mr. Marcia) wrote:Am I the only one who thinks it is somewhat odd to have a BBQ at a Zoo?

It was actually a great place for a competition. they have plenty of open space for us to set up and there is enough other stuff going on to attract the public.
Tom... I'll let you off the hook for this on. Being on STJ is the only good excuse! Have a great trip!

I am a member of the Philadelphia Zoo and they have these types of events all the time. It actually brings a different crowd into the zoo thus spreading the interest in the animals and raising funds!!

Here's the official schedule for the Zoo for the weekend. Friday night is a good time to hang out with the teams and have a drink, but there isn't much cooking going on (except for our dinner and the teams who will be taking part in the People's Choice (I don't think we are).
The cooking starts at around midnight and we cook until noon on Saturday and then we start turning the food in. there are also more activities on Saturday so it may be more interesting.
One note. A lot of the teams will shut out visitors starting at around 11:00 on Saturday morning because that are busy preparing their turn-ins. We still let visitors hang around as long as they stay out of the way. It gets a bit hectic between 11 and 1:30. But, that's the best time to get food samples from the teams who give them out, as long as you don't get into their "kitchen" area.

YUM!!!!!!!!!1 (Unfortunately, the $20 wristbands are limited to 100 guests, so if you want to participate, you will have to buy one.)

Hey Ron -
Thanks for the invite to this. It really sounds like fun and we would love to meet you. Unfortunately it won't work this time, but do keep us posted when you're in the area again and we'll try to plan another forum gathering for next summer.
Have a great time!

Waterguy stopped by for a visit on Friday on his way to O'Hare. It was nice to put a face with a name in person! We had a chance to chat for a while and then they took a walk around the zoo and continued their way to Chicago.
SeaNile... Did you make it? If you did, then I missed you somehow.
Overall it was a nice weekend, but Friday night was a bit of a challenge. There was a line of storms moving in from the west but they fizzled out before getting to us. We did get several periods of rain and a lot of wind, however. A few teams had wind damage to their pop-up canopies, including us. But, Saturday turned out to be a fantastic day. We ended up taking 8th place (out of 30) for our chicken and in the middle of the pack for the rest.
Here are pictures of our turn-in boxes...

Ron, that stuff looks great! Congratulations for your placement and holding up against the storms.
I have to ask you something. I watch a lot of cooking competitions on TV and I always wonder what is up with the styrofoam containers. It seems to me that closing things up in there creates a lot of steam and could impact the final product. Is that not the case?

Ron,
Great looking food!
Sorry we didn't make it. My son had his fishing boat, a beautiful day and a friend to share it with so his priorities changed.
We will HAVE to plan another Wisconsin/Illinois forum party next summer when all can attend. You and Tom could have a cook-off!
congratulations on your success there!
