Last week ( On Saturday) I took both routes. On the way to the barge I took the left past the Pueblo Market, just past Havensight. I think on the map it's the Blue Route. It goes past some hotels. The Home Depot, etc. On the way back I took the orange route. When you come out of the ferry make a left. The orange route seemed faster, but I didn't time it. If you need gas when you get to Red Hook don't use the Esso which is the first one you pass, it was 20-30 cents per gallon more expensive then the very next on up the road.
delta flts get in about 3 so usually heading to redhook about 4. on our ist trip we took the middle route up past medical center and stopped at tutu center for groceries since we didn't know what to expect on stj. there were a couple of cruise ships in habor so once shoreline dr narrowed to 2 lanes it was a nightmare and not much better around tutu at that time.
all subsequent trips we have gone the scenic route along skyline. you turn left off shoreline when it narrows to one lane. go about 5 blks to stop sign and turn left in front of ballfield and wind up hill past mayfolie and take next major right near the top of mountain that is stt's spine. there's a scenic overlook on right with great harbor views. nice longer drive with whole lot less congestion and on rds with rte #'s for what that's worth.
come back the same way but if you're not careful you can mess one left fork and wind up on north side of mountain but then you get some good views of stt northern shores.
i hate lines, waits and heavy traffic, i find i keep moving on this route and get on island time a lot faster, usually when i make left turn off shoreline.
