Hello, I am new

Post by LS »

Hello everyone, Though I have been lurking in the 'other' forum for over a year now I just got clued in to this board by the James Cockayne discussion.

My wife and I were in St. John for our honeymoon last year. I don't know about anyone else but my wedding was a near death experience so on our honeymoon we were a bit frazzled. On our 2nd day on the island my wife caught some coral on her knee and turned it into hamburger (sorry for the visual.) We got to visit the lovely Myrah Keating Smith Health Community Health Center and met Dr DeJames who http://www.rlshospital.org/images/pic_sm1.jpg) fixed her up. She is fine, just a nasty scar to remember our honeymoon. We just relaxed the rest of our trip. So you can see how we might think the island beat us.

This year we are coming back to beat the island! Sept 8th though the 15th, we are staying at the Hillcrest. The Hillcrest has consistently gotten stellar reviews and it is in our price range.

I've learned alot from reading the other board and this one. I do have one question:

Last year we took the New Horizons trip to the Baths, Cooper Island, and Jost and enjoyed it very much. This time we want to focus on snorkling in the hard to reach spots on St John and then go back to the Soggy Dollar. I see that Capt. Phil does both of these things, but not on the same day? Does anyone know of a day trip (sail or not) that will keep us close to St John for snorkling and then take us to Jost to relax?

Thanks in advance..

Welcome to the forum! :D

I know that you can rent a power boat with a captain from Ocean Runners, and they'll take you whereever you want to go. I have not done it myself (yet), though, so can't say whether it is worth it. Others will chime in soon, I am sure.

Check with Palma Bella. 1-340-714-5641. They also have a website but for the life of me I cant remember it. A search for Palma Bella St. John will probably bring it up. This is a 26' Power Caramaran. We are considering a trip with them next June!

Welcome aboard the board LS!

One affordable idea is to take the ferry to JVD for the day. {$50 round trip)

Then snorkle the remote areas of St. John on another day by driving there.

We snorkled around Waterlemon Cay last week and it was the best I have ever experienced. We did not make it to Long Bay on the east end but heard it is fabulous too!

Good Luck! 8)

As recommended by Pia on a similar thread,
I would call Trevor at the following link - he is wonderful and will recommend the best trip for your needs.

welcome. we honeymooned on STJ last year as well and yes we were frazzled from the wedding so it was a welcomed period of relaxation. No "hamburger knees" here but I did get sick as a dog while I was on vacation. Oh well... the rum helped!

I don't know names but it's the gentleman who invented the beeper. If you look at the lower left of the house you can see they have a tram that takes them down the cliff to the beach.

LS welcome to the forum. :)
I too have been wondering about charters, day sails, sunset dinner sails, etc. Are any of these an option during the first two weeks of Sept.?
I was hoping to line something up with Captain Clark on White Wing...but read in Pia's post on another thread that he has gone down island for hurricane season. Do most of them do the same thing?...mia

Welcome to the forum!! So glad you're going to give STJ another try, I love how you described your wedding (near death experience)!!

Capt. Phil does do both in one day and he is an excellent guide for snorkeling. But, I think he closes down in September. I've heard that a lot of boats get hauled that month for annual maintenance. Check out Ocean Runners or Nauti Nymph. Both will provide a Captain if you'd like. It's a little more costly than taking a charter, but an option you might enjoy exploring.

Happy Planning!

I do! His last name is Gross, AND when we were there in June the house was for sale! (That's how I know his last name, I don't know him personally). I can't remember the price--but I think it was $4 million. So, if you are a multi-millionaire, you may be able to buy the house of your dreams! :D

Still 4 weeks away and my mind is consumed with St. John. I can't get any work done!

Mia, are you looking to do some snorkeling from a charter? I am talking to Capitan John behind the scenes to see what we can work out.

In the meantime lets have some fun: this is a video the wife shot of us in St John last year driving down Gift Hill Rd. I sped the video up to about 300%, it looks like a roller coaster ride
