Suggestion: Let's start posting Grocery Prices

Post by Gromit »

Just had an idea that i thought might be helpful for St. John Virgins (aka newbies).

One of the most common questions we get here is what do things really cost on STJ?

I wonder if someone who is on island like STJRuth or Ron or even regular travelers would mind occasionally posting what they are paying for some grocery basics: Milk, eggs, butter, bread, soda, and maybe even throw in something random like chocolate chip cookies.

This would help forumites get a better idea of what prices are like at the grocery stores so that people can plan their vacation budget.

Maybe we could do gas as well?

It doesn't have to be every week, but every couple of weeks?

Just a thought, anyone game?
*Another fine scatterbrained production

I found one of my receipts from 10/6/06. Some items that might be of interest:

6 pack of Fiji water $8.59
Diet coke 6 pack $3.59
breakstone sour cream $2.89 (probably the 8oz)
pint half and half $1.59
Blue Corn Chips $4.49

This was the day we stopped in for steaks for dinner. I recall we bought 2 rib eyes and they were not huge pieces of meat. Bought them at the butcher counter they were not already packaged - $29.23

A bottle of Kunde Estates Chardonnay $12.89

While I thought the prices of liquor were high at Starfish, the price on this wine is about what I would pay at home.

There are other things on the receipt I can't identify as they just say grocery. Mind you this was just a "run in a get some things for dinner" and the total was $100.09. I will also add that on vacation we are not at all economical! LOL!

I don't know about anyone else but I don't find any of these prices all that offensive. The snack type items seem to be a little higher than I would expect at home but I really don't know my prices that well on those things.

Don't know what we were thinking with the Fiji water though ;) I know it was one of those "just throw it in the cart" deals! LOL maybe we should check next time :)

Wonderful idea! I've been trying to decide about taking frozen food for our trip next year. Grocery lists will help, as well as where the items were bought. Does anyone have any prices on bug repellant and sunscreen prices too? Thanks.

Marybeth - Fiji water is EXACTLY the reason my husband is not allowed to shop at Starfish unsupervised!

Its not technically Fiji Water's fault but Hubs runs through the store, grabbing whatever strikes his fancy. 75% ends up not being consumed, which is part of my irritation.

Oh I have no doubt that Charlie threw the Fiji in as well! LOL but we did drink it. I hope it was GOOD! :)

This is great - I find when we just "run in to grab dinner" at Starfish it is never less then 100.00! Our last trip my daughter threw in a bottle of chopped garlic in oil that was crazy it was so expensive (I found it when we unpacked the bags).....we NEVER used it but left it for the next renters who probably thought it was an odd thing to have on the shelf. Truly we don't look too closely at prices 'cause we tend to splurge when on vacation. (Well my hubby looks )

Caribemon - I went to Chelsea drugstore for some eh hum, girl stuff. Twice the price of home! 3oz of bug repellent per person should be plenty. As for the sunscreen, bring it from home if you are checking a bag. I brought 3 cans of the spray on for me and DJ and used every bit of it. Its about $7 here and $15 there per can. Im open to carry on sunscreen suggestions!

Does anyone know the approximate current price of a quart, half gallon or gallon of milk? Pound of butter or pound of bacon?

When I traveled to St John the last thing on my mind was the price of anything...I was there to enjoy the beauty of the island...share the memories of the island with my kids and show them where I went when I was a kid....the last thing on my mind was how much I spent for a gallon of milk...because if I had to worry about that then I wouldnt go anywhere...
