NAME THAT FISH!

Post by California Girl »

I've been working on trying to identify all the fish in my underwater pictures. And I have to give a big shout out to Anthony for selling me the Fish Flips! An excellent resource for identifying all the reef fish!

However... there are a few that still go unidentified and I would appreciate it if you guys could help me out and... NAME THAT FISH! :D

FISH #1, A LOVELY LITTLE BROWN SPOTTED GUY - SOME KIND OF GROUPER?

FISH #2, A NICE, SLEEK SILVER DUDE WITH A COOL BLACK SPOT ON HIS SIDE

FISH #3, A LITTLE BLACK GUY WITH WHITE POLKA DOTS & RED FINS

My guess;
#1 Juvenile Coney (grouper)
#2 Lane Snapper or Mahogany Snapper
#3 Juvenile Parrotfish

Since there are technically two fish in the last shot:
I'd have to say...

1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

From my fishy book, here's what I think.
1. Graysby
2. Butter Hamlet
3. Juvenile stoplight parrot - female.

I have a book, with actual pholographs, like the fish flips, but there are more in it. Its called Reef Fish in a pocket, Florida Caribbean Bahamas by Paul Humann & Ned Deloach. Bought it at Blue Water Divers in Sopers Hole in May.

Hey - I don't look anything like that fish. Well - OK, maybe the fish lips.

Thank you jimw & ScubaGirl! You seem to concur on that parrotfish! They really change a lot when they grow up, don't they! Like the blue tangs starting out yellow! Amazing stuff! Well, I have to go title my pictures now! Thanks you guys!

A thank you, too, for all of the other names that made me laugh! You guys are always so creative! Love it! Just love it!

I think #2 is a Mahogany Snapper, but #1 and #3 are definitely correct.

Now that you mention it, and I look again I think # 2 is a Lane snapper.

OK, I googled Butter Hamlet, Mahogany Snapper, and Lane Snapper.

The Butter Hamlet has a black spot at the base of the tail that your photo does not.

The Lane Hamlet has no black spot on the side, your photo does.

The Mahogany Snapper has a black spot in exactly the same place as your photo.

I beleive Mahogany Snapper is correct..
