Favorite Island Music
Yeah, yeah...Jimmy Buffett. Me, too. But I was wondering if anyone had anything a little less "traveled" that puts them in a STJ State of Mind.
At the villa where we stayed a couple of years ago there was a CD by Eric Stone (who I had never heard of previously) that, due to lack of options, I played over the speakers the owner had installed in the pool area. It was perfect! The title of the CD is Boatsongs Vol. II and it's now the music of choice for those warmer evenings on the deck at home when I'm wishing I was somewhere beachier.
(No, I didn't steal the CD from the villa. I had my laptop and a blank CD, so I copied it. Please don't blow me in to the RIAA!)

Hi RD,
A few months back we had a thread going with lots of forum members island playlists. You could look there for some ideas! Here is a link:

I've never heard of Eric Stone, and will have to check him out.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I like Eric Lindell's "Change In the Weather" - just a really laid back cd. Here is his website and you can sample some of the music: http://www.ericlindellband.com/
I also really like The Radiators - either "Law of the Fish" or "Ziggzagging Through Ghostland" are my favorites; although I do like "Total Evaportation" as well.

My opinion is that anything that puts you in a island mood is island music. Paul Simon's Graceland is one of our favorites. Had this in our Liberty CD player as we drove down Calabash Boom with a view of Coral Bay. Life doesn't get any better than that.
For something different check these out on iTunes. Just great music.
Dogons Amadou & Mariam
Mali Sadio Toumani Diabete
Tapera & Raki Oliver Mtukudzi
Kukuvarira Mukati Thomas Mapfumo
Mali Dje Ali Farka Toure
Kaira Ali Farka Toure/Toumani Diabete

Two bands from St John are Cool Sessions Brass and Ah We Band.. Great Calypso, Soca, Zouk music. If you'er here and hear of them playing make a point of going to hear them, especially Cool Sessions. You Won't be able to stand still...GUARANTEED

Roberto - a client recently gave me a copy of an Ali Farka Toure cd. Had never heard of him before. Good stuff.
Graceland is also a really good cd and man does Paul Simon put on a good show at Jazz Fest...one of my all time favorite acts.
On another note, next time I am making a mixed cd or two for the rental car. This year I only brought my iPod and realized that I would have loved to have tunes in the car.

This is a great thread.
The only thing I can add is Bob Marley and the Wailers, Hammer. We first heard that in our Villa, and laugh when we hear it, reminds us of good times! We heard it from a 3-4 cd set in our Villa, RD mentioned Villa cd's. The set was a reggae mix that we listened to all the time (when we were in the villa-I was out snorleling too much
) There was a bunch of other great music on there, but never wrote them down
I'll research the set someday.
Actually, this is it... haha.

Also, I have a related question to all the 2005'ers. We were there during the St. John festival in late June/early July (can't remember exactly) Does anyone know the live bands who played at the festival in the evening? We loved it, but never found out who they were. I had audio from my camera of some of the music that night, but my computer ate it
, and I never got it back. As Homer would say... "STUPID COMPUTER!"
We want to buy some of the bands cd's that played there, if we can find out who they were
