Where to get Fresh Fish
Where to get Fresh Fish
Where is the best place to buy fresh fish on the island?
We bought delicious tuna, mahi, and yellowtail snapper at the Fish Trap market. However, I would recommend calling before going over. We went three times and were only able to get fish once.
There is also sometimes a man selling fish next to Natures Nook in the afternoons.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
I think the tuna was around $20/lb, the mahi was around $16/lb, and the snapper I can't remember, but it was cheaper than those two, and he scaled and finned it for us. We bought two tuna steaks, two mahi fillets, and a whole snapper for about $50-60.PA Girl wrote:How are the prices at the Fish Trap?
My mom thought the price at the Fish Trap was outragous in Feb 2008 but her opinion of cost differs from mine.
Those prices are similar to slightly less to what we pay here for similar quality fish.

I so have Feb 2008 on the brain and and if she is going to be picking Power Ball numbers for anyone, it better be me!
Thanks for the price info. That is about what I expected. We actual got sick of eating out last trip and might be cooking in more next time.
I made Liamsaunt's grilled shrimp Friday night with a black bean and corn salad. Hubs was impressed and a bit perplexed when I told him I got the recipe off the forum.

That's about what we pay for FRESH fish here in NoVA. If you want cheaper, you can bring the Trader Joe's frozen stuff in your cooler. Have you ever wondered why the Trader Joe's frozen tuna is brown? They don't treat it with Carbon Monoxide to make it artificially red.liamsaunt wrote:I think the tuna was around $20/lb, the mahi was around $16/lb, and the snapper I can't remember, but it was cheaper than those two, and he scaled and finned it for us. The Fish Mon is cheaper, but you have to scale or filet it yourself... using a villa knife.

The liver is evil, it must be punished!

It's the stand that sells fruit and groceries directly across the street from the old ferry dock. When the man has fish, he sets up an umbrella right next to the stand. When we were there last trip, he did scale and cut up the fish for the person buying it. He chopped it into steaks though, not fillets.patr wrote:Where is Natures Nook?
