BVI Road Town

Post by njhdrider »

Hey all I am planning on taking the family to Road Town for a day trip. Instead of using the ferry, planning on renting a boat and navigating there ourselves. I need info on docking in Road Town, public marina, etc. all help greatly appreciated...

Thanks...

I cannot remember off the top of my head the marina we went to when a boat picked us up in RT last year - but I know it was a public one. You may have some luck asking this question on the TTOL (www.traveltalkonline.com) BVI forum. I am not sure if that was a marina that you could come from the USVI and check into customs right away...you will have to be really cautious about that. At any rate, there are a ton of bareboaters that post on the TTOL forum and I am sure they will have the info for you! Have fun!

Rider, may I offer opinion and since it's me, take it for what it's worth.

I'm not sure I'd spend all that time getting to Road Town and then turning around to come back. Road Town is okay, but not worth all that time. If you really want to get a good feel for Tortola, take a ferry over to West End. Before you go reserve a car through Denzyl in CB. He has an office in West End and will pick you up. Spend the day visiting Tortola's north shore beaches and end up in Road Town for a bite to eat and then head to West End for the last ferry back to STJ.

I have some pix at pbase.com/promoguy101 that I took a couple of years ago.

/just my opinion.

Promoguy has a very great point!! I don't know if there is something particular you are looking for in RT but I know you can dock at Sopers Hole (http://www.sopershole.com/) and walk around the warf and if you want a car - do it - or catch a cab to Smuggler's Cove and enjoy the best spot on the island (IMHO)...before it gets built up (apparently they are planning to put a resort there  ). Drive along to Long Bay, Cane Garden and/or Brewer's Bay...It was a year ago TODAY hubby and I left for Tortola for a week....and our wedding (married June 29th on Long Bay beach).

What kind of boat? Boston Whaler or the like?

If you're really wanting to take out a boat which is great fun! Go to Sopers Hole (west end) marina. Then grab a taxi there (as suggested by promo) to take you around the island. It's an easier sial form STT or STJ. Depending on the wind going east up to Rtown can be a bit rough & it will be slower getting there. You will need to clear customs & if you time it when there is no ferry this will be quicker at west end. You can tie up at the ferry/customs dock which will be on your port side entering Sopers Hole you can't miss it.

I also agree with promoguy. And the seas can be very rough in that area. If you choose to do it on your own. don't forget to check into customs when you arrive in Tortola. Have a great time. I love Tortola its a great island.
Peace,

Thanks again. One of the rental places takes care of the paperwork prior to leaving St John, so one less headache.....
