STJ Trip report # 1 : Days 1 and 2

Post by sea-nile »

St. John Trip report Day 1 and 2

This was the second trip to STJ for my husband (Jim) and myself (Terese) and the first trip for the kids (Mary 16 and Michael 12). My goal was to get the kids hooked on STJ and get my husband to be obsessed like me and to "get STJ".

Day 1:

I won't bore you with the travel details but I will say that all modes of transportation were on time or early and my kids were amazed that we took about every form of transportation to get to STJ.

Our ViIla Rep. took us to Villa Cielomar. I was pleasantly surprised since the price was so reasonable. Booking this villa was the first step in talking the husband into another trip to STJ because it was a good deal. I took pictures the last day, which was a mistake because the kids had already made it look like their rooms. :?
After getting settled Michael and I went swimming while Mary and Jim went to EveryTing for provisions (i.e. beer. The villa had complimentary rum, but Jim only drinks beer. Yea, more rum for me.)

We walked to town and had dinner at Woody's. I had a bushwacker and it was delicious. I had the grilled Mahi and Jim had the blackened. Michael had clam strips and I can't remember what Mary had. No food porn. We ate it right away because we were very hungry.

We walked along the beach and saw the baby black tipped sharks that had just hatched. I had a painkiller from the Beach Bar and we walked back home.
I was so glad to be there! The tree frogs were so loud! The frogs never kept me awake and when I got home to Wisconsin it was too quiet and I kind of missed them. :D

Day 2:
I woke up at 4 am, but did get back to sleep despite the excitement. The rooster didn't crow until 8:30. He must have been on island time.

Jim and Michael went to STJ Car rental to get the car at 9:00 and were back by 9:30.
We headed off and had to stop at the Trunk Bay overlook and take this picture again. How cliché.

We went to Maho Beach. This was recommended by forum members as the best beach for beginners. The snorkeling was great and the kids did real well. We started over the seagrass and saw a very large stingray and I didn't have my camera. :(
We saw a lot of fish and I brought the camera when we went out for the second time. The stingray was gone.

Next we went to Cinnamon Bay and had lunch and then snorkeled on the right side of the rocks. It was great! We saw a very large school of blue tang and many other fish.

We took some posed pictures. After seeing Kellyanna's I thought that seemed like fun.

We went back to the Villa and got cleaned up and went to Starfish Market for provisions.
Jim dropped Mary and I off at the open-air market in Cruz Bay and I bought this carved fish from Joseph.

Mary liked looking at the art and she almost bought a painting of a redheaded mermaid because the artist said it looked like her. (My daughter is an artist herself).
We went to STJ Spice but Ruth and Ron weren't there. We bought some things. It is a very nice store! So is the kid's store!
I wrote a T in the sand. I was going to spell my whole name but was lazy. I guess no one saw it.

Went to Frank Bay for sunset and had cheese and crackers and a drink. It was a beautiful sunset.

We then went home and Mary and I made a spaghetti dinner while Michael and Jim swam.
Bed at 9:30.

Tomorrow: Trunk and Caneel and Forum gathering.
Monday: Limnos excursion

Nice pictures-thanks for sharing! Your comment on taking pictures of the villa on the last day made me smile. When we get to a place I'm always like "wait, i have to take pictures, before we a)drop the luggage, b) rumple the beds, etc etc etc" :D so i know the feeling.

villa pool looked pretty!

This is great...I can never get enough of my Trip Report 'fixes'!

The picture of you and your daughter on the rocks is absolutely precious...You could be sisters instead of mother/daughter! What a great memory!

Thanks...can't wait for more installments!

Sea-nile ~ I think we were neighbors during our trip. My hubby and I stayed right up the hill at Amora. Based on your pics, might have been on Frank Bay some of the same nights for sunset! I know for sure we were there on Wed, as I had read that Coconut Coast did a open studio event from 5:30-7, what I failed to read was that it was in season only. Sometimes you only see what you want to!!
I am in the process of proofing my report. It's kinda cool to read reports of those there at the same time, re-live it in a different way. I smiled when you mentioned the rooster, wonder if it was the same one! Looking forward to the rest of your reports.
