Car Ins ???'s

Post by JJShaw »

We have reserved a car with Sutton's, he includes some ins. with a deductible of 1500.00 however according to his wife (I assume thats who answered the phone)...they do not offer other ins so we wouldnt have such a high deduct. should something happen. I called my company where I am insured, seems I am not covered in the USVI. And its my understanding if we use a M/C for the rental, they will not cover it due to it being SUV. Anyone have any suggestions? Or are we stuck with a 1500 deductible policy that wont cover alot and hope for the best ?

Thanks for any info.

I'm using American Express. They have a premium coverage for $24.95 if you use an American Express card to pay for the car rental.

Here's a link:

My insurance agent told me I am covered since its a US territory and that I will only pay my Allstate deductible ($400 i think) if I smash up the rental car...not the deductible that the rental place charges. I guess everyone's insurance differes in some ways.

Does anyone know what the deductible is at STJ Car rental if you buy their $12 per day insurance?

Our car insurance won't cover us in STJ.

I guess I should have thought of this long ago. Better late than never!

JJ,

US Auto Ins policies (and they are all the same either written by AAIS or ISO) state "Coverage extends to US possessions and territories" whoever you spoke with gave you some bad info.

SUV not covered? OK-question you have a personal auto policy which covers comprehensive and collision? I don't know WHY it wouldn't be covered--the exclusion typically excludes coverage for vehicle which are considered "commercial" type vehicles IE 16 passenger vans, panel trucks etc.

Check the deductible aspect because that is what the insurance relieves you of paying. MC will normally pay up to $1,000 of that.

Most respectfully JJ call the agency back and speak with a licensed agent and ask them to read you the relevant portions of the policy.

You are doing the right thing by checking these things out.

Also, if you are buying trip insurance, some also include some kind of rental car coverage.

Lost income is the responsibility of the owners of the vehicle not the renter, the renter cannot insure for loss of income whether it is jet ski of a rented mule. Not his problem, he doesn't own it.

I just called on this the other day and I was told by my insurance agent that we ARE covered in the USVI but not for the collision damage waiver/loss of use of the rental vehicle. My agent told me to check with my credit card company which I did.

Here is what they said in an email (I have a mastercard)

"Your card has MasterRental Car Insurance Coverage which covers the collision damage waiver and losses due to theft. When you pay the entire rental transaction with your eligible mastercard, you may be covered for up to $50,000 without the additional expense that the rental agency charges. Coverage is secondary in the United States and Primary outside the country. Coverage applies if the contracted rental period does no exceed 15 consecutive days"

Hope that helps someone!

Suds,
I did call...the agent and the companies main office..I assumed maybe the agent didnt want to take them time to call since I had asked her to check for me last week and still hadnt heard back...they also told me I wouldnt be covered, then about 5 minutes later the agent called me and told me the same thing.
As far as having a personal auto policy which covers Liabilty and comprehensive ...I have that with no Deductible for on the comprehensive...with exceptionally higher limits than what our state requires on the liability however I DONT have a collision coverage due to our vehicles being paid for and there are no Liens against the titles. Therefore Im at a loss...any suggestions ? :(
